TurboTax or other tax software?
« on: November 15, 2009, 01:04:48 AM »
I have never used Turbo Tax before, but I hear it is quite easy to use.  I have not yet filed my taxes from here and I don't fancy paying the fees most people ask for.  I looked on the Turbo Tax website. I don't know which one I need for filling out a return from the UK.  I make such a small amount of money each year.  Less than $8,000.  I only work part time and I work from home.  Should be a very simple form to fill out but I panic cause I have no idea where to even start.  Would the Turbo Tax Basic work for what I need?  Does it work on a Mac?

If your taxes are relatively straight forward, I would just fill out the forms by hand. I have tried doing them online, but get caught up in the fact that you need to write in 'Non-Resident Alien' in the space where it asks for your spouse's SSN, and the computer doesn't like that.

The FAQ on the Embassy's IRS webpage is a good source of info: http://www.usembassy.org.uk/irs/irsfaq.htm and you can download the forms from the IRS website: http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/.

If you had the equivalent of $10,000 in a foreign bank account at any point during the year you are filing for, you also need to fill out a TD F 90-22.1. There are penalties for failing to file this form.
