Formula in the USA
« on: October 22, 2009, 03:14:33 AM »
I've tried googling and searching here on UKY with no success, so figured I'd post a new question on this.  DD's on SMA toddler milk and we never had time to get a small canister before we got to the states (today).   ;D  Does anyone know what stores sell SMA so I don't go searching high and low for this stuff or if its sold under a different name what it is?  I've tried the local Giant Eagle and they only sell Similac.

The stores nearby are: Heinens, Giant Eagle, Walmart, Target, CVS, Walgreens.  I'll be near a Kroger and a Meijers later this week if that helps at all.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure if it's sold under a different name here (I've never heard of it).   However, you might try contacting your pediatrician (either here or there) to find out if they can get that information for you.  If it's not sold here under a different name, they might at least be able to help you determine another brand that would work well.  For what it's worth, we used Enfamil and the girls found it easy to digest.

Be careful if you open the website at work.  It has some lady yakking at you for a while about how awesome their product is.  The mute button is on the left side somewhere.

Thanks for that.  We don't have a pediatrician, we only have our GPs at our local surgery (there're about 6 of them).  I doubt they'd be any bit useful and the surgery's policy is a call back which won't happen since we're already state side now.   :-\\\\  I've seen Similac as well, but I have no clue when it comes to formula.  She's only been on formula for the past 5 months to tide her to her birthday next month.

If I don't find SMA I think I might give the Enfamil a chance.  I just hope I can find a small can of it as I don't really need a massive amount for her night bottle for 2 weeks.

You won't find SMA in the states (we used SMA) I say try Enfamil or any of the other brands, imo they are all very similar.

Thanks Racheeee!  I found on google a couple articles saying SMA was sold in the states, but then found an article about SMA getting done for illegal advertising in the US a couple years back.  SMA states in the company history that they had a manufacturing plant in Michigan, but couldn't find anything else.  Think will just try Enfamil instead of going on a wild goose chase (wait and see after I buy Enfamil I'll probably find SMA).   ;)

SMA used to be the same formulation as Walmart's own brand IIRC. We researched this back when Sammy was 8 months old. We spoke to the SMA hotline people about this, but they said they could no longer guarantee it was.

When we got to the US, we used Enfamil at first but then switched to Walmart's own brand just because it was cheaper. Formula is expensive here!

How long are you in the US and where are you? We have a ton of extra formula in the cupboard that you could have. Sammy can no longer have it with his dairy allergy and Jake is on whole milk.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

We used the Wal Mart Brand Gold formula when we visited last year....this year when we visit we're going to use the same. DD is normally on Cow & Gate and we compared the lables when we were there and found that in terms of ingredients and vits & min's values it was pretty much the same.

She had no reactions to it and chowed down on it.
