Congratulations!  I hope you enjoy it.  Would you mind keeping us (well, me) updated on how it goes?  I'm interested in how the OU functions.  Thanks!

This programme celebrating the OU's 40th birthday, explains how it operates and its' history pretty well:

It's on again tomorrow, if you wish to record it!  :)

Welcome to the OU club.  :D  I started by taking a science course last autumn.  My plan was to obtain a degree in life sciences.  However, since I really need to obtain some job skills I will take an accounting course this autumn.

Thought I'd update this thread by saying the process for enrolment is so easy, and everything on the OU site is very straightforward.  I've registered for my first course and the materials for the course, which are included in the fee, are being shipped to my house.

Like other uni's, you have to be resident for 3 years for the local fees  :-\\\\

Shame about the fees :/ How annoying for you!! :(

But good about everything else, congrats and I hope it goes really well. The OU is really cool, I wish I had the time to do some courses, everything looks awesome :)

Just to update for those curious about the OU system:

-Received a HUGE package with all of my books and materials in it within a week of enrolling.  8 books, 2 DVDs, and a box of rocks (ok it's slightly more technical than that, but it's for geology).

mmmm Books... om nom nom...

-Shipment came with a course guide book, and between the intructions on that and the website, everything seems to be smooth sailing. Was really easy to log in, navigate, and follow the course book.

-Took a general knowledge check and passed... woot.

-The main course page is really handy.  you have dates, reminders, a forum for classmates, email system, and a study guide.  really easy to use and organize yourself by.

Cant wait for Oct 3 school to begin!

Having just complted my first month at the OU, first quiz and first assignment, I thought I'd update this thread for those looking at the OU:

The study syllabus is sraightforward, easy to follow, etc.  It gives time frames for reading groups of chapters from the book you're on, as well as the due date for any assignments and quizzes coming up.  You can work on the assignment as you read, and the quizzes are small (10 questions).  For the quizzes, you have 2-3 attempts at each question which takes some getting used to... obviously with a computer marked quiz it isn't at all flexible on the answer (for myself, with the math questions its right or wrong, obviously no partial credit for correct work, etc). But they only count for 2% of your final score. The assignments count for much more.

I will say the pace is pretty intense.  In 20 days I finished the entire first book (from the image above, Global Warming) some 200 pages. Now, as of tomorrow, we move on to the second book.  So the important thing is to keep up with the study guide and don't fall behind, or you may find yourself playing catch up with half a book of information.

One Saturday a month you will have a tutor day at the local uni for about 6 hours as well in order to meet your classmates, ask questions, etc.

All in all I am enjoying my experiences with the OU.
