question about this board
« on: December 15, 2009, 12:40:04 PM »

I am not sure how this board is used so...

DW is doing is doing an HNC in Early Education in childcare. She has asked if I could post a questionnaire on here. I said I wasn't sure if it was allowed. Also said I wasn't sure if she'd get responses. If someone else posted a questionnaire here, I may or may not answer it dependant on the topic.

She has 10 questions and it regards drinking/drug habits. I said for start I doubt very seriously anyone here is going to openly answer questions about drug use. She said ok it could be just the alcohol questions. I said you may get some answers to some questions. I also said this is not anonymous so the answers may not be accurate. IE one may answer 4 beers a week when in fact anonymously they may have answered 20 beers a week. Does that make sense?

She says she needs a minimum of 10 respondants.

But...
Am I allowed to use the board in this manner (not breaking any rules?)
If so, is there a way to insure anonymity? I mean they could PM but then that is down to a trust issue. I still would not feel comfortable providing personal information on some topics to a name on the internet even be it that he is a handsome, amiable, polite gentleman.

I think she was suppose to collect this by asking people in the street but says she doesn't have time now. Any suggestions?

Thanks

I will volunteer to fill out the questionnaire, though my answers will be very boring, but at least that's one down, only nine more people to go.

It's fine to post this Bob, no problem. Perhaps you can PM or email the questionnaire to anyone who is interested.  From an ethics standpoint, I think the usual way these things are done is the student sets up a questionnaire on a website somewhere with answers you can click on without identifying yourself. I've seen people do this on livejournal, for example.

I'm happy to do it. The thing to keep in mind is, as you've said, you may end up with a biased sample because the people who answer it are ones who perhaps don't feel they have anything that couldn't be stated publicly. There are websites where you can set up questionnaires for free, like this: http://www.esurveyspro.com/Prices.aspx
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012
FINALLY A CITIZEN! 29/2/2012

Hey thanks Andee, Navie and DrSuperL. I'll PM you. DW also just said to say many thanks.

Thanks Shahbanou & DrSuperL for the links. I'll tell her about that but it'll only come back to me. I'll see about the LJ thing. It will be biased because of lack of anonymity and I don't think we are representative of this society, I mean we're always on here and not down at the boozer. I think. LOL

Think it would be much better if she had a scale or multiple choice answers. She's got so much to learn. I really hate being a college student again. I'm too old for this. Trying to explain how to answer essay questions or referencing, even verb usage to someone who is not from our educational background, is so hard. But I have to take my hat off that she is half way through her second year and hasn't given up. DD is also doing an HNC and she is having so much fun this year too. The college has had a crack down this year on things like references (no Wiki at all), proper spelling, verb usage, plagiarism, etc. Stuff that I always took as the norm. I'd have never dreamt of handing a paper in without foot notes, index, references etc.

Again thanks

Bob, PM me the survey too.

I'll post it on "the other forum" which should ensure you get some answers on a broader spectrum.

Is the HNC a university degree? I think most universities have pretty stringent ethics and data collection rules that limit the way in which you can collect surveys and things like that. Personally I think a lot of the rules are over the top, but if you're at a university that takes them very seriously then you can get in trouble for not following them. If your wife was given instructions how to collect this data, then she should probably not advertise it if she ends up getting it in a different way, just to make sure there's no problems.

My own two cents is that a survey on drugs and alcohol based on responses solely from UKY is likely to be so biased as to be meaningless... but hey, at the end of term, you gotta do what you gotta do  :)

HNCs tend to be from further education colleges, not universities.
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012

Cool! That would be really good. Given your boisterous gang over there, that should help balance it a bit.

Thanks sheateawholepie!

She says they were told to interview 10 people. So not really an ample amount IMO. She did say a few (on workplacement at nurseries) prepared questionnaires and put them envelopes and handed them out to the parents when they picked their children up.

This is not university but a college and I fully agree with the bias. That's why I want her to use the links that Shahbanou and DrSuperL provided.
