Tapeworm
« on: November 13, 2009, 09:33:15 PM »
My darling & lovely cat apparently brought tapeworm from America. He had fleas right before I brought him over which we treated. We've been here two months and I recently (in the past week) noticed .. droppings. Very odd ones. I couldn't, for the life of me, figure out what it was. I finally spent a few minutes googling - yup, tapeworm. Most certainly.

I've emailed the vet down the road from me to make an appointment ASAP. Will someone just tell me it'll be OK until I can get an appointment? And remind me that, no, I nor my husband will get tapeworm. And that bringing my cat to the in-laws for the weekend wasn't the worst thing ever, as it won't hurt any of them?

Thanks!
Met in person - 07/10/06

Arrived in St Andrews with cat and husband: 13/09/09

Been there and not had a tapeworm myself! I think you'll be fine - your biggest concern is probably to get kitty sorted out so he doesn't lose too much weight!

It's going to be OK!!!!

Technically, a lot of tapeworms *are* zoonotic (which means they can pass from animals to humans - and the main reason that the UK is so antsy about having your pet take tapeworm killing treatment before they come over to the UK is that one particular kind of tapeworm can be very nasty in people) but as long as you don't go around eating fleas you should be Ok ;-)
