Completing toddler's immunizations in the UK & need advice!
« on: November 10, 2009, 10:44:43 PM »
I moved to Birmingham UK in May 2009 with my husband and 13 month old son. After registering with a surgery, I was told by the nurse that my son did not need any further immunizations until age 3. However, according to the US schedule he should have received another booster of DTaP and Hib between the ages of 15-18 months. I am having difficulty discussing this with our GP as she seems to think I am being overly anxious and sees no need for further vaccines. According to the CDC the 4th DTaP booster is very important. And the Hib is given 4 times here in the UK. My son has only had 3 of each.

Has any else encountered this and if so, what can I do to make sure my son has the immunizations he needs? Are the US DTaP and the UK DTaP given in different doses? (Which could explain why the US gives 4 and the UK gives 3.) Is there help available to make sure this process is done correctly?

Thank you for your help,
Rayna

I'm assuming you've showed them your child's Vaccination / Immunisation records and they've come to this conclusion?

Here're Vaccination charts from the CDC and NHS for childhool vaccinations.

In the UK the 4th DTaP is done at the age of 3 years and 4 months as the child is getting ready to attend Nursery / Preschool on a more full-time basis.  You may want to look into getting your child up to date on his MenC (MCV - meningococcal vaccine), as its administered earlier in the UK than in the US.

You'll also find that the following are not standarly vaccinated against in children in the UK, however you can probably opt to pay private on all, but not guaranteed:
- Rotavirus
- Hep B (you would have to pay for Hep B privately if your child weren't up to date and you wanted the vaccine)
- Hep A
- Flu - unless there's an underlying medical condition ie. Asthma which will automatically qualifly you for it, otherwise you can opt to pay for the flu jab at pharmacies or other locations
- Varicella (chicken pox) - you can opt to go to a private physician to have this done.  I know a few Moms on the forum have done so and I believe it was quite expensive for the jab, but I'm not positive, plus I think they had a difficult finding Drs that would / did do it.   :-\\\\  If you're interested in it you may want to do a search on the forum for more info.
