Silly NHS Number Question
« on: January 02, 2005, 06:36:06 PM »
Among my possessions is my OLD (ca. 1971) NHS card.  I haven't lived full time in the UK for about 30 years now.  When I move back, do I give them my old number?  I'm assuming I do that as opposed to getting a new number....it follows you for life, right?

As a side note, I noticed the doctor my mother registered me with was Dr. Dummer!   :o  When I asked her about it, she said it was either him or Dr. Pretzel, and for some reason Dr. Dummer seemed the better choice at the time!  ;D
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

Yes, you can use the same number. I had an NHS number in the 70's when my parents lived in England for a few years. When I moved back last year, I was able to use my same number.

You'll never use your NHS number anyway, closet hippie.... you should show your card when you get registered with your new doctor, but after that you will probably never use it again.

You never know. I got asked for mine about 4 years ago when registerring with a new GP.  I hadn't a clue what it was and they refused to accept me as a patient!

Yeah... whenever i have registered with a new GP, i've had to show my card, which has the number on it.
I just meant that she wouldnt need to use the number on a regular basis.    :)
