Hello Everyone!!
« on: July 28, 2004, 08:52:20 PM »
First let me say what a great website!  Everyone seems so helpful and friendly, with so much information to share.  Well I am currently living in Ohio, USC, and my DF is from Wales.  Like most here we met online almost two years ago, and hope to be married early next year, with him moving here soon afterward.  I have read alot about the protocol for moving to the UK, however how different is it for the move to the US from the UK?

 :D :D :D :D :D

Welcome AmyLe!  ;D Will you be moving to Wales then?

Not sure about how different is to move to the US from the UK but you could probably get an idea from the Repatriation board, I would think.  :)

Oh, it's very different from the UK to the US... :-\\\\  Things like medical exams and background police checks...

Welcome

I can't realy speak to any actual differences, but my English hubby came over to the US to live with me.  (I poke around here beacuse we talk about going over back to the UK from time to time).  He got a fiance visa and we were married in the US.  From filing for his fiance vias to getting his green card took almost 2 years.  (He got his green card 2 weeks ago)  Like Peedal said, there are medical exams, police checks, but also finger prints, FBI background checks, interviews in the UK and the US, and every form has a fee (and they all just went up).

Also, his stuff took 6 months to get here, but I think that was more from a port strike and the fact that he didn't fill the container, than the norm.  I don't regret any bit of it (except maybe missing all of the money).  :)

Thanks Becca,

I didnt realize the differences and how long it actually takes for the whole process.  You must be a very patient person  ;D, we have yet to start the process, and looks like it may delay a few things, guess we better get started then, lol.  How did your hubby adjust to the US. I have told my Df it is one thing to visit , but a whole different story to live here, to try to make the adjustment as smooth as possible.  But thanks for the help.

He'd visited often since he wa a kid, but he complins daily about the US.  It's politics at the moment.  He felt quite out of place as we were living with my parents to start.  After we got settled in our own place, he got a job, and a car (we're in Houston, life can't move forward withiut a car), he settled in quite nicely.

After we got married and filed the paperwork for the green card he was able to get a SSN and get his name on stuff.  Having your name on the lease goes a long way to feeling like you're home.

I'm not sure how it is if you get married in th UK and then come over.  The threads under repatriation may be of more help with that route.
