Cashing a US tax return cheque in the UK
« on: September 15, 2009, 11:35:43 AM »
Hi

So I did my tax return, and online it says it was sent 3 days ago.  Has anyone ever deposited their tax return into their UK bank? If so, how long did it take to clear? And since I sent my return to London, is the cheque being sent from London, or is it being sent from the US?

Thanks

I'm not sure where the cheque is sent from as I had my tax return direct deposited into my US account, but for info about cashing it, the best thing to do would be to go into your bank branch and ask them. I received a travel expenses reimbursement from a US university last year (US-dollar cheque for $400) and Natwest charged me about £10 to pay it into my UK Natwest account. They said it could take up to 28 days to clear but in the end I think it was in my account in about a week or so.

I'm saving mine for our trip to the states, was hoping to cash it there for our spending money to avoid all the extra exchange fees. Hoping it won't be too much of a problem to cash it, though. It has my UK address on it. Anyone ever done this? I have both Texas and UK ID cards, and I thought maybe I could just sign it over to my mom and let her cash it at her bank, if nothing else.

If you have a bank in the US they should cash it for you in person. My US based bank (Credit Union) has changed their policy regarding tax return checks and now requires that you present the check in person at one of their branches and will not accept them deposited through the mail (which is what I used to do when I received a check in USD) or through the ATM. Also, I think you only have 6 months from the date of issue of the check to cash it, but that should be printed on the front of the check.

I know a lot of check cashing places will not cash any government checks anymore.

I paid our IRS check into our UK bank and it cleared within a week.  we had terrible problems trying to cash it in the US coz I wasn't on the bank account. in the end we did find a check cashing place that did it happily, but now finally we get it direct into the account. so much easier
