Product rights in the UK?

I purchased a winter coat about 6 weeks ago but didn't wear it until this week.  I had a cursory look over the coat when I bought it but since I have worn it, I have noticed some real problems with the quality. One shoulder seam is not secure, some of the threading on the arm cuff has popped.  The worst is that the back has what looks like grease spots -- only noticed by my boyfriend since it is on my back.  I am outside the exchange period but think this would classify as a fault product.  

Can anyone point me to a website that explains the rights I have?  I just want them to exchange it, nothing more.  I have googled but not sure I know the name of what I am looking for so have not found advice yet.

I would say it also depends on where you bough it - if you bought it at a cheap clothing store (Primark, New Look, Asda, etc) I wouldn't have too many expectations about it. I got a cheap coat last year and wound up reinforcing both shoulder seams and all the buttons before I wore it, but I considered it my punishment for buying a £15 coat!

Where you bought it doesn't effect your rights as per Trading Standards. If an item is faulty you have the right to return, replace or have your item repaired for up to 6 years after purchase.

Got back from the shop and it was nearly the best experience in customer service I have had in the UK.  I showed the spots and seam problems and they immediately looked for a replacement in the store.  They didn't have one so they are going to post it to my work, on Monday.  No questions asked.  No concerns raised about how long I have owned it or the number of times worn.  Was really nice just to have it taken care of.

This is true but just be aware they will consider how much the item cost and how long you could reasonably expect the item to last.  For example, if you have a pair of socks that gets a hole after 2 years, you can forget it. On the other hand, a £300 coat might be expected  to last a good few years. 

Also the 6 year rule in relation to consumer goods may be changing to bring the UK into line with other EU countries.
