Opinions/reviews of LoveFilm.com?
« on: November 18, 2009, 10:43:34 AM »
Ok, I hunted around on UKY, and last time people discussed the DVD mail rental service LoveFilm was in 2008. I was curious what people's opinions are these days?

People had mentioned that the company disregarded the queue that the customer established. Possibly that the company even added additional items to the queue. Is that still the case?

Also, something I have not heard about, is the mailing time, from return to receipt of new DVD, decent?

I am especially curious because we're looking into ways to cut costs, and certainly the cable television is a tremendous expense. Being that we're under contract for another month or two, I wanted to get this research in now...

Many thanks!

Ok, this really isn't an answer to your question, but it's funny....

I work as a credit/debit-card fraud analyst, so I review lots of transaction activity to determine whether or not there's been fraud.  I've seen Lovefilm.de on a lot of transaction histories, and I always thought it was some kind of German porn site!  I had no idea that it was just like Netflix.

I'll be looking at those transactions somewhat differently from now on. :p

I wrote about my issues with LoveFilm, and I think it was this year, but I don't know how they are now because I quit.  I was too annoyed with the service to carry on.

Hi, I think we're on the 2 a month plan for £3.99.  In your queue you have the option to set 'priority' on films, high, medium and low.  They try to stick to your high priority films first, but in no particular order and sometimes they'll just move on to another part of your list.  I've never had anything random added to my queue by the company.

They're getting a bit better recently with letting you stream movies online which is included in you monthly fee (like Netflix).  They did have it where you could pay extra to rent an online stream which we never bothered to use.  Seemed silly to pay extra when I could probably find it somewhere else online for free.

I don't find their reccomendations very useful or their searches for 'new releases' which doesn't show new movies, but just any new releases that the site has so I have to sift through old movies and TV shows.  I end up going to other sites to see what's new, as in, what came out in theater in the last year or 2.

They do offer waiting lists for things that aren't even out yet which is handy in case you forget that there's something you wanted to see that perhaps you didn't want to bother with at the cinema.

Delivery seems to be very quick, but then again I don't really pay attention.  Half the time we forget to send the movie back before the next month starts.  :-[

We usually get an email saying what the next DVD on our list is and when it should arrive after we send one back.  The site also sends out emails of when they have sales going on of their used discs which you can usually get for very cheap.  Oh, should also mention, we had a bad disc once which we sent back for a replacement which arrived fairly quick and we were also given an extra rental for free.  Which seems to carry over for a while because it still shows on our account, and we received another free rental 'just because'.

All in all, I'd say a good service, much better than running to Blockbuster.  You'll get the most out of it by actually staying on top of returning your discs... unlike us :)

Agreed. I wasn't happy with Lovefilm last year, so we switched to Blockbuster online and we absolutely love it. It's so much better, in my opinion. We get more dvds each week than we ever got with Lovefilm, better selection, and we get the things that we want to see most first. Love it!

I'm so lazy, but I keep planning on joining Blockbuster because you get coupons to use in the store and I pass one on my way to work.  That way if I want something NOW, I can use it.

We've been on Lovefilm for years now. I can't remember if I said anything about it last year but we think it's ok.

We're not particularly bothered if we don't get a certain film, as long as it's on our list, we're happy. If there is something we're dying to see, we'll put it on high priority and about 80% of the time it'll come in the next posting.

All in all, we're happy with Lovefilm. It's better than Blockbuster, if you ask me.

I forgot to mention that we love the fact that you can rent some films online and watch them online. It's nice to have something to watch when we're waiting for the next posting.

Our experience is about the same as Ashley's.  We've had Lovefilm for years.

The turnaround is very quick, send one back on a Monday and you'll have another by Thursday or Friday.
I had unlimited for a 3 month free trial, and then went to 4 a month (2 at a time) for just under £8. I've just changed it, as we weren't watching them quick enough, to a "pay as you go", the one I went for still allowed you to have 2 at a time which I like as you then have a choice what to watch, an upfront payment of £30 for 15 rentals and the only stipulation is that you have to use them in 6 months.

Some do have a long wait but you can prioritise, the list otherwise is in alphabetical order, you can only make then high/medium/low priority. I like the fact you can have seperate lists and say what you want from each so, for example, we have a list each and say 1 from each at any time.

Not had anything sent that wasn't on the list

I think it depends on what you want to watch as well.

I watch a lot of TV shows, so sending disk 2, which I had marked as low priority, instead of disk 1 marked as high, and ignoring the 40 or so movies on medium, was not acceptable.

But if you are watching more films then I can't see a problem.

I've never had TV series sent out of order, they may have changed it since you were a member as the list is threaded and I think it stops that being possible now, however what I did have was them send the 2nd disc before I sent the first back which meant both my rentals were the TV series.
To get around this I set up a seperate listing for TV series and set it up to be 1 from there at a time. I've also set it where I put just the 1st disc from a series on the list and then when I mailed that back I went on and put disc 2 on my list etc.

Thanks. I appreciate the opinions. I am especially glad to hear about the tv series linkage because that's usually what I go for.

I'll be somewhat sad to get rid of the fancy cable, but I don't think we get what we pay for. Whereas signing up for LoveFilm and just having a broadband provider will probably be the right way to go... It worked for us in the US.

Best, Rutabega

Love Film does not have a huge selection like Netflix back in the states.
As soon as I return a film, I get a new one almost immediately.
I've never had them give me a movie that I didn't request.
They stick to the high/medium/low priority on the list.
I can't complain, except for the lack of selection.
