Pregnancy Insomnia - Normal at this stage?
« on: December 04, 2009, 01:18:49 PM »
Seeing as there are soooooooooo many glowing, blooming pregnant ladies on here, I have to ask are any of you suffering insomnia in the early stages?? I am 13 weeks now and feel like I have not had a full nights sleep since I found out. I go to bed, best of intentions and my mind literally races, the impending visa application, will they let me on the plane to go over there and get married in Feb, finances, childbirth, childcare, weight loss, weight gain....even worrying about the fact I am not worrying! What the hell?

I read up on the internet, and most sites allude to the fact it's normal towards the end....am I alone in this, or just anxious as hell? :-\\\\

(and don't even get me started on the hormones, when I cry watching Maury...somethings up!)

Oh man, I had the worst pregnancy insomnia last night!  Of course, mine was mostly due to heartburn & giant bump making me uncomfortable, but I think it could just as easily happen in the early months.

I also burst into tears at a Blue Cross charity commercial.  I hate those things.

I've not had any insomnia and have been sleeping at  least 10 hours every night because its the only time i can escape the nausea and vomitting.... but you have a lot more on your plate than pregnancy at the moment, so I wouldn't really attribute it to that. Like you said, your mind is racing, so i'd say thats more likely the reason you can't sleep. I do recall having some visa insomnia though a few years ago when i was getting all my visas sorted out.

FWIW, I've not had insomnia until fairly recently...it's a vicious cycle, because I get exhausted during the day but can't sleep through the night either.  I slept like a rock for the first 30 weeks or so, but I can see how nausea might keep someone awake.  Plus if you've got stress like moving, wedding, etc the hormones from that probably keep you awake too!  I'm sure it will pass ;)

I don't think anything is normal in pregnancy because each pregnancy is so different! But at 28 weeks the minute I have trouble sleeping, this darned baby starts doing cartwheels! Nothing keeps you more awake than an active baby!

In spite of my little darling's favorite habit being kicking the bed THROUGH my stomach, that doesn't seem to disturb my sleep.  Nor does my bladder; I have yet to get up to go pee in the night (not bad for being almost 37 weeks, eh?! :D).  No, it's just not being able to turn over that does it; I keep getting caught on my own belly. I very much look forward to being able to resume tossing and turning per normal...

Anyways Kashuna, have you tried mental imagery to try and coax yourself to sleep?  One of my faves if there's a nice fan or a breeze is to imagine camping in a crisp, cool forest with snow falling.  The occasional bit wafts into the tend and melts on your face, but you're all snuggly and warm beneath the blankets.  It tends to work quite a treat for me and clearing my mind, so maybe that'll help? :)

I love this idea! I often do this and I take a drive from the airport to my favorite beach resort. Lovely!

Thanks gals! All good advice, I love the mental imaging idea Raeyn...very good,I'll try that.

As it is slept like a log last night as I had gone BEYOND exhausted. Reading the tales of the "more advanced" aka kicking, heartburn etc, there's worse to come! lol

I'm sorry for whining, guys ,you are right it's probably more so what I have on my plate at the minute,  thanks for your kind words.  ;)

This is me!  I only have to get once to pee (and it's fairly recent, too, so I know I've been lucky), I just wake up every hour to TURN OVER because it's such a cumbersome ordeal!

Never mind the cat's latest trick of pacing back and forth all night and demanding feeding at 3am ::)

I'm only 7 weeks and I have a strange combination of being completely exhausted and sleeping for 12+ hours...then having insomnia the next night and only getting 4-5 hours if I'm lucky.  I slept fine until I found out I was pregnant, but I wouldn't really chalk it up to being pregnant at this stage.  If anything, in the earlier stages, sleeping all the time is more common than insomnia.

In your case, I'd actually equate your insomnia to all the stress and worrying, not the pregnancy.  Although I'm sure being pregnant doesn't help.  Maybe try some relaxation techniques before bedtime and that will help you calm your mind and not worry so much when you need rest.

Also, I've had incredibly bad morning sickness...and being stressed and worried makes that a lot worse...so I try to stay cool to keep make my belly behave so I can eat and sleep in peace.

Yeah 'Shrubs, you are probably right.

For what it's worth my morning sickness just "left" at week 11, I found eating little and often (wholewheat pitta breads, cheese & vine cherry tomatoes = Gods-send) so hang on in there... ;)

One of my cats (Batman, pictured here in what's left of my lap) is the epitome of momma's boy; he does his best to curl up on or around me.  His nighttime hobby of the moment is to wait for that moment where I'm flat on my back while slowly turning (so as to not steal the blankets too much from my poor freezing husband!), and then curl up in the bowl of my legs.  I'm much too tired in general to give in to that, though, so he gets flipped out without much ado.

As for heartburn.. we keep the indigestion tablets on the shelf behind the bed! :D

Week 7 is the WORSE so hang in there love!! That was the week i was hospitalized because i was throwing up so much that i lost 10lbs in a week and was severely dehydrated.  :-\\\\

For me, weeks 6, 7, 8 were horrid and i felt like i was dieing... week 9 was horrid but bareable and now im on week 10 and I've either gotten used to the morning sickness or am getting better because im only sick once or twice during the day, as opposed to the 5 or 6 that i was before. (Although, im still constantly nauscious!).. so im begining to think there is a light at the end of the morning sickness tunnel.
