Where Do I Apply Nappy Cream?
« on: December 03, 2009, 09:02:03 AM »
As in, what part of the body (and yes, I know it's used for nappy rash). But I'm just wondering because my SIL doesn't apply it to my niece's bottom, she applies it right on her bits...and with me having a boy, I don't know if I'm meant to be doing the same?

My niece doesn't have any rash, so it's purely preventative...but I always thought it was meant to be applied to a baby's bum. Then again, my experience is all from the States and my mom never used a cream, she just used baby powder.

So where should one apply nappy creams (like Sudocrem)?

Well, my stepson used to sometimes get a rash on his bits and/or his bum and so we had to put cream on both. I don't think my DH used the cream unless DSS actually had a rash. I am pretty sure he just used baby wipes and powder the rest of the time. But I'm certainly not the most knowledgeable person to ask!  ;D

That's what we did with our two. We always mainly put it on the sore places, which you can tell because they look red and uncomfortable. If the boy's thingy looks uncomfortable, (or its dependents) then give it a bit of cream, it won't do any harm.

A good friend of mine and his wife just had a boy and he coats all the bits, crevices etc in the cream.  not swimming in it, but a light coating.

Only apply it to the bum bits (or the other if they appear red and sore) if there is some irritation, you won't need to use it with every nappy change. Just use it when you need to.

I only use Sudocreme on my DD's bottom if it appears to be getting a bit red. Thankfully she has never had nappy rash only just occasional redness.

anywhere that's red, but only when there is redness.  If I used it every change every day we'd go through tons of sudocrem!

Edited to add: we mainly use cloth nappies so don't have much of an issue

Preventatively & when sore: everywhere

Just a note if you're using Sudocreme - you don't need a whole lot as its meant to be rubbed in so it has an almost iridescent sheen.

Its up to you if you want to go the nappy cream route from the start or as needed.  You'll find what works best for and with your baby's skin.   ;)

Good luck and not long now!

I know your question has been answered now but can I just recommend a brilliant baby book I had that you might find useful.  It's very basic and explains everything from scratch. I was so glad I had it!

You can also use Vasoline as a preventative...cheaper than diaper cream...and is excellent at keeping wetness off the skin.  As mentioned before, you don't have to use it on every change.

He he, yes keep forgetting to mention Vaseline - as it has the least amount of ingredients and is usually recommended as a starter if your baby has sensitive skin.   ;)  However, not so great if you're going the reusable nappy route as it can guck the nappies up...

I never used it as preventative.  Too lazy.

But I use it on whatever appears a bit red or sore - bums, bits, even sometimes parts of their legs where they meet the groin.

I have two girls and a boy and sometimes their bits can get rash.

I never used it preventatively. There's such a thing as too much (in my weird little world, at least) and only on the red bits. He rarely had a rash though.
