Humming Sound--danger?!
« on: November 22, 2009, 04:19:38 PM »
Just getting settled with eletronics, and all sorts of questions.

Is it unusual to hear a humming sound when you use an adpator to plug something in. I tried my compact CD player and my clock radio (120v 60HZ) and a weird humming noise is coming out. I promptly unplugged.

Am I doing something wrong?

As the UK doesn't run on the same voltage as the US, you will need an converter for electronics not equipped to handle 240 volts. On the plug, it should say the range of voltages that it can run. A converter is not the same thing as an adaptor.

What creess said...

I'm not electrician but I'd say humming noises (that weren't there before) are never good.  If you're using a converter (which is most likely what you need since the voltage isn't 240) you might actually hear a humming sound coming from the converter, but you shouldn't hear it from the product plugged into it.
