traveling sickline?
« on: January 06, 2010, 08:52:15 PM »
My friend is going to her sisters wedding. She is recently pregnant and having a hard time with it her doctor has offered her a sick line and she has declined it. She is now considering going to the wedding (her tickets and holiday days are pre aranged) and staying there some extra time to rest and re-coup, her mom has offered to take care of her. Is it possible to get a sick line in the US that will apply in the UK?

Will someone still get paid statutory sick pay if they become sick while on vacation?

Is she flying to her destination?

If she is flying she needs to contact the airline to see if they will allow her to fly to her destination. If she gets on the plane knowing she is sick and she takes a turn for the worse in flight...her insurance if she has it might not cover....

she is off and on again sick with pregnancy stuff. Basically her husband travels for work and she doesnt want to be alone. She is flying home for this wedding and has a few days off for holiday, so she wanted to extend her "holiday" by basically getting a sick line, so she can  stay with her mom for a week or so and relax with someone to take of her.

Just a quick one... is a "sick line" a medical certificate, or what is often called a sick note sooth o' the border?

I believe that if you are on holiday (paid leave) from work and you fall ill and want to have sick leave instead, either SSP alone or with any company sick pay that may be going, you definitely need a certificate.

[Edit] I believe that SSP is not payable for any period spent outside the UK.

Seems like you may be able to get SSP for a period out of the country. But there are 3 or 4 "waiting days" I seem to recall.

I don't see how someone can claim SSP if they know in advance when they're going to be unwell.  If she wants to extend her holiday, she should just extend her holiday.

Ok she just decided to take some extra holiday time unpaid

But this has me wondering, what if you truly become sick overseas. Like you catch a stomach virus or break your arm. I know travel insurance will pay for the medical bill, but can a Doc overseas fax in a sickline so you can still receive statutory sick pay?

Decision made, so this may not mean anything, but it's wise to also check with her work.  I worked for my local council, and if I took a certain number of days sick leave, I had to begin my period of statutory maternity leave at that time instead of when I had the baby.

I worked for a university and this was true as well.
