Walking in the cold....
« on: December 11, 2009, 07:26:20 PM »
Yesterday, we went to Stockport, and we walked around from what DH said, a total of approx 6 miles. I was so sore that I took 2 paracetamol before bed!

Today, we went into town centre to get cards and some other odds and ends. We always walk into town, because it's a pain in the a** to pay for parking. Both times, my legs did this wierd thing where I felt cold, but, instead of moving faster to get the blood circulating, I'd walk slower because I felt....well, for lack of a better phrase, like my legs feel like they were frozen. WTF?! It probably didn't help that I wore the wrong socks yesterday and now have blisters on the bottom of my feet that annoy the heck out of me.

DH is a serious power walker, and I...well, I'm not. The thing is, I was starting to get better at keeping up with him.  And now that I'm not walking as fast as I had done, only a few weeks ago, it irritates me that I'm slowing up again.

I've been here since July/August. The coldest I've ever felt in San Diego is a nothing little chill, compared to this weather. Is there something wrong with me, though?!

If you're not much of a walker, six miles is a lot to do! Take it easy! Maybe you need to explain to your husband that you're going to have to work up to his level slowly - not just dive in and try to keep up. I'm not sure about 'frozen leg' symptoms - I don't really know what that could be. But it definitely sounds as if you overdid it! I hope your aches are better soon.

I get like that too when it's extremely cold out.  I'm not sure if its' actually freezing or if it's just my joints reaction to the cold.  I found wearing a pair of tights under my jeans really helped to keep my legs warm, and I also wore knee-high legwarmers over my pants on the really cold days.  I might have looked silly, but I was warm!

A pair of thin wool leggings under your regular clothing will do you a world of good.  I bought my Icebreaker leggings in the US, but it looks like they are sold in the UK too:

By the way, I tend to be fairly sensitive to wool next to my skin (even cashmere is a problem), but the saleslady talked me into buying these with the promise that I could return them if they were uncomfortable.  And in fact, they turned out to be great.

Don't worry, they are very thin, so you're not going to feel or look like the Michelin man.

You may be tempted to buy a cheaper synthetic version (Uniqlo is promoting something now, I think).  I cannot vouch for any of those, but perhaps they are worth trying.  Maybe someone else here can advise?

Smartwool socks are a great product too, warm without being bulky.

Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks! I told DH my symptoms, and he told me to do some stretching before we went out on our walks, to get the blood circulating properly. My aunt in Chicago is supposed to send me a load of clothes and things, and I know she's gonna put in some tights for me. Wish she could send me some Filipino food as well, but, at least I know where to get some one my own! And next time, I shall take the bus. :D
