Renting with 2 large dogs
« on: December 21, 2009, 09:27:14 PM »
I have seen some posts about success renting an apartment or house with small dogs, but I haven't noticed any experiences yet with larger dogs. We have two dogs - a lab/husky and great pyranees - and are considering a job offer in Kent. It seems like most people rent in the UK, but I'm worried that this will be a potential issue for us with two dogs. Does anyone have any insight into how difficult this might be or if I should even be concerned about this?

I found it really hard to rent in london with pets. Mainly because most letting agents really have a strict no pets policy. So many people find themselves going on places like gumtree.com or papers for private lets which can be a headache sometimes because you never really know what type of landlord you are going to end up with. Sorry I can not be more help but I think when talking to letting agencies they will be able to let you know either straightaway no pets of maybe you can kind of let them talk to owner into it. Otherwise private let is your only option

I have two cats and found difficult to rent a flat with them in London.  I had the "zero-pets" letting agent take me around the borough.  He was very negative saying that his firm had never once let a contract with pets.  In addition, he had never heard of any letting agency that would tolerate them.  At one of the flats, the actual owner was present.  I got to speak to him directly and worked a deal where I put down some extra damage deposit.  However, although I was successful in this case, I don't think that I could've rented some of the better value/in demand properties I visited because of the cats.

we rented privately (through a friend of boyfriends) so we were able to move in with our dog plus get another dog.

Before we moved in though,my boyfriend rented a flat through a letting agent and was told no pets as well. However,he became friendly with the landlord and was able to get his dog,but had to pay for any damages done.

I'm also curious about renting in London with pets.
My future Husband just moved into a flat in East London.  My cat & I will be joining him late Feb.  FH mentioned that it's hard to find rentals for pets and the ones that allow pets charge a big pet fee.  I can't find any general info online about pet fees.  FH swears we'll be fine without paying the pet fee, but I'm very worried.
If it's so hard to rent with pets in London does that mean pets are not that common in London?

You have to look around.  We found a place (through an agency even) that allowed cats.  We just have to get the place professionally cleaned when we moved out.  Some wanted a bigger deposit, some were fine without additional deposit.

We don't live near the Square Mile, and a lot of the places we called in Westminster and Kensington out and out barred pets.  However, going to private landlords or being willing to live outside inner London might be an answer for people having difficulties.

Dogs, I have no experience with trying to find a place with them.

Please don't do this. If you get caught, it will make it harder for the next tenant to rent with a pet.

I'd rather not do it, but FH is being stubborn about not wanting to pay the fee.  I'll continue to look into it on my end.  I really don't want the stress of waiting to get caught and kicked out of the apt because of the cat.
