My husband has bought several iPods on E-bay (he likes to take them apart). Some of them work really well, others not so much, and all of them look used. To be fair, he does go for the cheapest ones possible, so there may be nicer ones available. It's really a case of caveat emptor; I'd be really careful to check with the seller that the iPod is working properly. DH has bought a couple that the seller claimed were working, but has had problems with them after a few weeks. However, you can get professionally refurbished iPods through the Apple Store that are guaranteed by Apple. DH got me one of those for my birthday, and it works beautifully and looks new. Apple had put it in a new case with a new battery. Plus it came with new headphones and a microfibre cloth to clean it (it's a Touch). Go to the iPod section of the Apple Store webpage, and down at the bottom right there should be a link to refurbished iPods. Also, I think there are licensed Apple retailers that might have professionally refurbished iPods for sale, it's worth seeing if there's one in your area.
