What's that in the second column?

In the second column, there seems to be different things. I've seen a piece of paper (I think?) a smiley face, and an exclamation point. What do they all mean?

If you look at that page with the 2nd column and scroll all the way to the bottom it shows you what the icons mean, also if you look at the post form where you're typing a response and you see the box under the subject that says 'Message Icon' that's what shows up in the 2nd column if you're starting a topic (an exclamation point usually means important and a question mark means a question...etc).
