Double Prams
« on: January 22, 2010, 03:14:01 PM »
We're currently researching double buggies. We've weighed up the pros and cons to tandem vs side by side and we think we're going to go for a side by side. Seeing as I have back issues and I'll be the main pusher, the tandem ones are simply too long to push around and they're difficult to get up stairs and stuff. Plus they're no good for off-roading.

Poor Jon has been researching potential buggies for weeks now. I think it's really stressing him out. I was wondering if anyone could give any advice on double buggies they've used?

The ones we're looking at are the Easywalker Duowalker SKY Pushchair and the Mountain Buggy Double however if there is a pushchair that you think is the must have in double pushchairs then let me know!

I don't know if you are a regular bus rider, but I saw a woman with a side by side stroller REALLY struggling on the bus one day. The stroller barely fit in between the bars and she even banged one of the kids against a bar. My sister had a tandem double stroller that I used to push my two nephews in once and I thought I was going to die it was so heavy and awkward to steer. She rarely used it and I could see why.

Sorry, I just realized that I gave you no advice whatsoever! Have you tried 'test driving' some?

With the tandom you'll find that you kill your back going up and down curbs, steps and getting on and off the bus.  With side by side you'll have trouble getting through the doors and aisles.  It's swings and roundabouts really.
My friend who had twins had the BEST pushchair for twins.  It was swedish and was narrower than most side by sides.  Let me see if I can find it.  She loved it and we all coveted it.

I think they are all pretty heavy, and as someone with back issues, I would absolutely go with an inline one, Phil and Teds all the way! Its light, attractive and easy to manipulate!!!

I however am not going for a double as my son is 4, and even though he loves going in his pushchair, we are going with a buggyboard for my old Bugaboo Frog. Should be interesting!!

I agree about the Phil and Teds.  My SIL used one and loved it.

Have you gone to try them out yet A?  That is the best thing to do.  Get to a store and try them all.  (It's fun too!) :D

Ashley, if it were me, I'd send a PM to Yorkshire/Virginia - I'm sure he wouldn't mind - he's local for us. Their twins are now 6 (I think) but he & Mrs Y/V might be able to give you some advice.  :)

I've used them both and tandem, hands down, is the better option IMHO. I have a bad back and tendonitis in my elbows and I would still go with a tandem. Especially in the UK where aisles and doors and buses can be so narrow. When we had the side-by-side, it was a rather narrow one and I still couldn't get it into half the shops in Carlisle and it was a bear to steer.

I'm not a Phil and Ted fan, either. I know loads of people love them, but I think they are weird for the kids and stupid expensive.

We got a tandem from one of the market stalls in Carlisle (you know, the permanent indoor ones). It was a floor model from Mothercare and we still have it now.

I know it's not what you wanted to hear, but food for thought!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I'm not a fan of the Phil and Ted because I always feel bad for the kid underneath, but the twin one looks pretty good since they're side by side!

I'm afraid Phil and Teds tandems are not an option for us. They don't make tandem prams for two infants. We want something we can use for both from birth.

We've not had a chance to try any out because no one (and I do mean NO ONE) has tandem pushchairs for twin infants on show. Mothercare is useless and Babies R Us is worse. We've phoned around to baby boutiques but, again, they have nothing they can show for twin infants. This is the biggest problem we've had with twins, no one has things on show specifically for twins. It's always for one toddler and one infant.

We can look at the side by sides, though and this is one of the reasons I'm more inclined to the side by sides, because I can at least try it first.

We will be getting a car shortly after the girls are born, so I won't be taking public transport all that much. We just want something that is roughly the width of a wheelchair to ensure that we can get into most doors.

My friend who had twins had the BEST pushchair for twins.  It was swedish and was narrower than most side by sides.  Let me see if I can find it.  She loved it and we all coveted it.

Let me know if you find out. One of our old members (you may remember Jenny) had twins not too long ago. She's got the Nipper 360 and the TAMBA reviews aren't that bad for that one.

I know a couple women in our village who've had twins over the past couple of years.  Several have Phil & Ted's pushchairs, but I think it's generally down to our terrain and space more than anything else.  One of the more recent ones has the iCandy Pear.  It looks quite versatile and can use carseats, prams and then be converted to seats for the kiddies.  She's handled it really well with some of the narrow footpaths in our village and the terrain without difficulty.   ;)  I know it's more expensive, but it's pretty easy to customise it to your needs more than other pushchairs by the look of it.   :-\\\\

Have you tried looking at the TwinsUK website's store?  They have Tandems and Double buggies to give you an idea where to start.  Also you might want to check out the other Multiple Birth websites - they'll help with finding pushchairs that are more friendly from birth onwards, as well as other general support and advice.   ;)

Good luck finding a pushchair that you'll be happy with!

ETA:  Was just having a look at Kiddicare.com in their sale (ends in 6 days) and they have  a whole selection of Twin Pushchairs both side by side and tandem.    ;)
