Moving to the UK
« on: January 26, 2010, 07:06:20 PM »
Hello, I am moving to the UK to live for a min of one year. I am in California now but plan on returning to the UK sometime in March. I have completed all my Visa requirements and have received my passport back from the British embassy to live and work in the UK. My sister has lived in the UK for some time but is living there under a marriage visa so our circumstances are a bit different, I will be living in the UK under the Rights Of Access visa. These rights are for parents (me) of children that are living and going to school in the UK. How this has happend is my wife British citizen and me US citizen had two children and were living in the US when our marriage came to an end and she took the kids to live in her home country. Its all a bit complicated but i am trying to make the best of it and live close to my children and be a good dad. I have turn to the internet and any other American citizens out there that might be able to help me understand that once in the UK how do i go about heath care for myself? My children our covered but I'm unsure on where to look for my self! Thank you for reading my very complicated story and hope your all staying warm! Brett

Welcome to UKY Brett...

You should be able to use the NHS since your visa is longer than 6 months. Just register with a GP when you arrive and you should be good to go.

Welcome, Brett!  I really think that's great that you are moving over here to be closer to your kids. I am sure you will find a lot of help on this forum for any questions you might have or if you just need some support through the moving and settling in process. I do believe that WebyJ is right - you should be entitled to use the NHS if you are living here, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be covered. Good luck with all the planning and preparations - it can be stressful, but I am sure it's worth going through it so you can spend more time with your little ones. Good luck!
