Cloth diapering in UK
« on: January 29, 2010, 01:06:44 AM »
I cloth diapered Henry (my 3 yr old) for oh, 8 months or so here in the US. I stopped mainly because of a medicine he was on that I couldn't wash out of the diapers easily, and that lasted a long time. I regret not going back to it.

In the US I mainly used Bum Genius all-in-one diapers, and also one or two that had inserts. I'm not a big fan of inserts as a rule, but I'd use them as an extra layer in the Bum Genius if needed and that worked just fine. I see that I can order bum genius online in the UK so if we go this route again, that's what I'll start with.

Has anyone tried the Pop-in, or the Tot Bot? Those look interesting.
Also - I started cloth with henry once he was out of preemie nappies, which was a few months. So I'm unfamiliar with using cloth with a newborn, I think I remember reading that there is a certain brand/style that works best at that age. Anyone?

Found those on here: http://www.thecottonnappycompany.co.uk

But washers are different, etc etc, and I assume I'd do more line drying, so I'm looking for someone in the UK with just some experience. :)
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

I used a version of Tots Bots. I don't think you can buy them new anymore, just on Ebay. They were a thick terry and I loved them. I did a combo of line and dryer drying. They were a bit too stiff for my preference if I totally line dried them.

When Sammy was a newborn, we actually used muslin squares that I folded as a diaper. Someone on here also recommended using microfibre cleaning cloths as extra absorption and that worked well - and, bonus - they are cheap at any grocery store!

Nappy San is awesome for using in addition to your detergent of choice. I wish I could get it here.

I got some of my stuff from here:

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

No experience of it myself but just wanted to let you know some councils here now offer subsidies if you use cloth nappies so check out your council website for that.

Yes, most councils do a £30 rebate if you spend a certain amount and submit your receipts.  We use Tots Bots Bamboozles (a two part, way more absorbent than cotton and silky soft!) and I got them as seconds on the Tots Bots site at 50% off.  I also use a couple of BumGenius diapers as well, but the Tots Bots are definitely the more absorbent; I use them with a fleece liner and they're great.  I didn't start her in them as a newborn as the birth-to-potty kind I went for started at 10lbs and she was only 7lbs 1.5oz at birth and a long leggy thing.  We used disposables until she was big enough, which also meant we were through the meconium stage, which would have been icky in cloth.  You're best to buy one of a couple different brands when yours is little and see what fits best before you invest in a set - you may find you're surprised, after all they (babies) come in such different shapes and sizes.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

I cloth diaper right now with my newborn :).

Personally, I've stayed away from all-in-ones as they're not supposed to be as good for containing liquids or solids.  We currently use a combination of Motherease One Size and plain terry squares, both of which are the base nappy part and then I use Motherease Airflow Wraps over the top.  It's early days, but have not had a single leak.

One size nappies are supposedly good because they are birth-to-potty.  The only disadvantage is they are a bit bulky on a newborn, but nothing unmanageable.  I'm preferring the terry squares purely because I can fold them slightly smaller to decrease bulk, but they're also more fiddly so it's a trade-off.  I've heard the Bimble cloth nappy is especially good for newborns, but I don't have one to try.

We also use fleece (washable) liners which are infinitely better at catching liquidy breastfed-baby poo than flushable paper ones.  Also, the Motherease One Size come with popper boosters, but I tend to also throw one of my bamboo boosters in there as well for extra absorbancy.

Line drying's not an option for us (nor do we have a tumble dryer), so I invested in a heated tower airer from Lakleand (the best £75 ever spent).  I do a wash every other day and the stuff is always dry within 12 hours.

I have loved my cloth nappies and find the UK to be much more cloth friendly than the States--for some reason nearly all of my girlfriends here have used cloth on their kids and they don't look at me like I'm some kind of oddball for using cloth.

I've used the Easy Peasy Bimbles that Aless was talking about and loved them.  I found some really cute lemon yellow coloured ones and got a handful of used ones as well.  I didn't have enough to only use the Bimbles so I also used some of my Easy Peasy Bumbles folded up in the newborn fold.  They were bulky, but worked okay.

Once we got past newborn, she's been in the Bumbles exclusively.  We started in a flat with no clothes line and no dryer, so I went with the cotton Bumbles because of good absorbency combined with good drying time.  I've been happy with them, but they aren't as cutesy or small as some of the newer-age stuff.  I've not had problems at all with leaks, and find them to be very absorbent.  I've never worried about leaving her in them overnight.

I tried a few different wraps and have just loved my mother-ease wraps with the poppers.

Good luck making choices--ask if you have any questions here.  I've found everyone to be very helpful.  Oh, if you're okay with buying used nappies, I've found these sites to be very helpful with trying different brands at less expense:
