Dependent?
« on: January 31, 2010, 10:48:52 AM »
Hi everyone,

I'm really confused for this year's tax return... Basically, for the first 6 months of 2009 I was living with my mother. I was working, but I made a small enough amount that she was planning to claim me as a dependent. After I moved to the UK, I began working from August until December.

My questions: Can my mother still claim me as a dependent? And how do I go about claiming both of these things? The expat taxes really confuse me (and I'm sure they will until I actually do them). Any links or advice are appreciated!

I don't know about your mother claiming you, but as far as links, I've done my taxes for the past few years using the TurboTax website, I think it's the basic edition for $19.95 and it couldn't have been easier. It takes you through all the steps including the 2225 form.  You can pay for it before you print it out with a UK credit card and just put in a US address; I used my mom's.

I'm sure someone will pop up soon that can answer your other question.  :)

Thanks a lot. :) I was thinking about using TurboTax! Nice to know it's only $19.95.

I'm concerned that my mom won't be able to claim me as a dependent.  :-\\\\ That will screw her up and make her owe more. It's a shame because I lived with her from June '08 - June '09 as a dependent.

Thank you!

She can't claim me because I stopped being a student in December of 2008. Oh well. I just called and informed my father. Bit unfair, as I did rely on them for just over half a year, but it's the law.  :-\\\\ Again, thanks for the help!
