Does anyone know if 3 (or other mobile companies) will allow you to cancel your contract without having to pay it off if you move out of the UK?  The phone I am considering getting is free on a 24 month contract.  However, there is a good chance I will be moving back to the US in about 20 months.

You will need to contact 3 regarding the cancellation at least 1 month prior to the time you would need to cancel your contract if you are terminating your contract early.  They will determine how much to charge you for your cancellation fee and they'll be able to tell you if you'd need to pay off your remaining months too.   :-\\\\

3 - How do I cancel my Contract?
How early termination fees (cancellation fees) are calculated

Good luck!

I have 3 in Bristol and it works great where Orange, Vodaphone, and O2 have a crap signal. In London i would say your fine. Since they are a smaller company they have build up their coverage in large cities when you look at their coverage map. I also got a contact and a free phone with out any effort but it might be because my husband and I have a joint account so there is credit history to the account. No advice on the contract thing though. If you hadn't already got the phone I would say get a pay as you go card and try it out for a month and then get a contract.

I have 3, and I love it because of the skype feature. However, there are a lot of areas with limited signal.  :-\\\\ I know they are currently updating their network to make it better, and so every now and then we'll have a couple days with crappy signal. This only happens every couple of months though.

I don't mind. I'll stick with 3. They are the most affordable, and I can use my Skype account to call my mom wherever I am.
Finally living with my Husband in London after 6 1/2 years together but apart... and loving my life!

Having used a variety of service provider, I think Vodafone probably has best overall coverage across the UK.  Obviously, certain locations will be tricky for any service provider but they seem very good.
I've heard 3/Three are very city-centric and coverage really falls off outside larger towns and cities but I've not had one myself so I don't have first hand experience.

I would say if the service was such that you didn't get any because the phone was faulty or something like that, you could at the very least contact a newspaper like Guardian Money to fight your side if 3 don't refund you or cancel your contract.

2 bars out of 4 isn't so bad, it's when it gets down to 1 (or zero!) where reception is fuzzy.  Obviously you want full signal but I've found in a lot of houses there are areas where mobile reception can be dodgy.
And the world first spoke to me in Sensurround
