boarding kennel for dog in (west) London?
« on: January 11, 2010, 12:47:46 PM »
We may need to travel outside of the UK for a few days at some point, so I need to think about where our dog can stay while we are away.  No travel plans at present, I just want to be prepared.

I have seen many, many advertisements for in-home pet sitting services, but ideally I'd prefer a proper boarding kennel, if such a thing exists in London (we are in Richmond, western London).  Some place where my small dog would have her own indoor "cabin" (as her US kennel called their rooms), and she would be allowed to take a few bathroom breaks each day, either in a secure enclosed garden or in a playroom.  Preferably with experienced, trained staff who will treat her kindly and will know how to respond in case of emergency.  I hope this is not expecting too much.

Do you know any good kennels in London?  Likewise, if there are any that you would suggest avoiding, I'd be grateful to know about those too.

Thank you so much for your advice!

Just out of curiosity, why would you prefer a boarding kennel rather than home boarding?  Are you concerned about the qualifications of the home boarding families?  If this is the case, I would suggest you take a look at some of the home boarding websites and see how strict their vetting process is for "sitters".  They are very well qualified and IMO provide a less stressful environment for your dog. I can recommend a fantastic home boarding company if you are ever interested in that.

Thank you for your response, mirrajay.  Yes, we are concerned about the safety of home boarding.

I don't want to worry about my dog eating potentially dangerous things that have been accidentally left lying around or dropped on the floor, I don't want to worry about her jumping on and off furniture or climbing stairs, I don't want to worry about her running out the door into traffic, I don't want to worry about someone tripping over her or stepping on her accidentally (she is very small, and it happens).  The risk of all of these things will be minimized in a purpose-built environment.  We've been taking care of her for several years, and even though we know her behavior really well, we still make mistakes from time to time, and unfortunately some of these mistakes have been life-threatening.  It's not realistic to expect a stranger to predict what she might do, and to totally puppy-proof their home and their life.  I don't want to have to tell a pet sitter that every time they leave the room they need to make sure to push all of the dining chairs right up to the edge of the table, or else she will use a chair as a stepping stool to get up on the table and look for food.  There is an endless list of things like that.  We will use a pet sitter as a last resort, but would much prefer a kennel where there is a limit to the sort of trouble she can get into.

Has anyone tried or heard anything about Elmtree Pet Hotel in north London?  The website is impressive.

I can't give you a specific recommendation because I live nowhere near you, but we found the kennel where we board our Weimaraner by asking other dog walkers where they board.  Word of mouth is normally the best way to find a good kennel.
Not MrsRichUK anymore!  :-)

We take our dog here http://www.greyhoundboardingkennels.com/
It doesn't look like much from the outside but they really take care of your dog.
