Rented house torn up after rewiring
« on: February 17, 2010, 01:12:05 PM »
We found out that our landlord (private rental) never had the wiring/electric inspection done in our house back in November or so. After 2 months, she finally had it inspected after we threatened to withhold rent, and surprise surprise, the whole house was unsafe and needed a complete rewiring. It took another month before she actually had the work done.

Two weeks later, the work is now complete and our house is a mess (see photos below). They basically had to tear away the wall from socket/switch to floor/ceiling leaving gaping holes. Then they plastered over the holes and filled in the holes where old switches/plugs were. And that's it. Every single room now has had this done in multiple places. There are tiles that got ripped off in the kitchen behind the stove, and it's just a total mess. Our ceiling lights are now bulbs hanging from wires.

When we moved in, the house was hideous, but not torn apart. There were light fixtures for all the ceiling and wall lights, etc. Our landlord is extremely cheap. We actually deal with the owner of the house's 21-year-old daughter as our landlord. The owner actually argued with the electrician and said that just because the house isn't in accordance with safety regulations doesn't mean that he has to have it done. To give you a clearer idea: when I told them that I thought there might be a widespread wiring problem in the house as I was told by an electrician I'd called after describing the problems we were having ... they sent an ex-handyman for "a broken lightbulb" to solve the problem.

Anyway, to get to my question: our house looks like complete crap now, and I get a strong feeling that our landlord/house owner isn't going to restore it to how it was or at least decent shape. I feel like it's not fair for us to continue paying the same amount for a house that looks like this. I know that generally tenants are responsible for internal decoration, but does anyone know if that's the case for something like this?
