Do you rinse out the kettle before every use?
« on: January 30, 2010, 04:34:24 PM »
I know this seems odd, but I'm wondering what others do. I used to not really change out the water in the kettle if there was some in there from the last time I used it (as long as it was within a couple of days). Now I've gotten into the habit of rinsing the kettle of the old water before putting in fresh water. Is that weird? I guess my thought process is that the water could go "stale" and possible harbor mold or something if it sits there overnight. I have an electric kettle at work and a regular old school stove top kettle (that only has an opening at the spout. I can't see inside it.) and I do this with both of them.

What do you folks do?

I never really rinse it as such. I do put fresh water in it every day though (but it's environmentally friendlier not to fill it fuller than need be, so in actuality I put fresh water in nearly every time I use it) and then I descale it once every month or two, depending on what the element looks like (you can see the build up).

I use fresh water for each use.  I don't fill it full each time, only a teensy bit more than needed for the cup -- it boils more quickly and fresh water makes for tastier tea.

This is what I do as well, but if there does happen to be water left over I dump it and use fresh water.

This is what I do. But if I happen to have any water leftover, I just reboil it. I almost never have water left in the kettle overnight, as I do a full boil to fill my hot water bottle every night because of my freezing house.

Same here! Boiling a full kettle is the last thing I do every night!

And I'm like the others - I only fill it as full as I need it. But I do dump out leftover water and add fresh unless it's within a really short time of using it.

I only pour it out if there's just a little left, or if it's been there for a long time.  Unless I'm making really nice tea, then I always use fresh water.  Water that's been boiled too much has a flat taste.

I'm rubbish and overfill it, and then promptly forget about it.  It's definitely better that I should let my husband deal with the kettle until I get myself better trained. *giggles*

My DH does that and it makes me crazy! I always ask him if he's making tea for the queen.  :P

I try to only put in the amount of water I need. If there's any left, I always pour it out and add fresh water each time. My son thinks it's ridiculous and that I should use the water that is in there but if it's been too long, I can't bring myself to use it.
