Manchester - whats it like?
« on: February 03, 2010, 06:38:06 PM »
Hi everyone,

I am moving to Manchester England hopefully in about 2-3 months to be with my boyfriend, and was wondering if those who live in Manchester as well and moved from the USA, or those who have been there often can tell me what its like?  What are your impressions of the people, places, is it nice, fun etc?

Im sorry if this isnt the correct place to post this.

Thanks!
 ;D

Thats a good question. lol  But I have been to England an enormous amount of times, and know what different areas are like, so its not like I have never been to the UK.  He has been living over in the states with me for months, and now is unable to come back, so I have made a choice to move there.

Does it really matter where you are with the person you love as long as you are together?  Plus who says we arent going to move somewhere else in England?

What can I say Im gutsy. lol

Good word for it!  ;)

I've visited Manchester, but never lived there.
Some people call it 'Gunchester' due to the crime levels, but the bits I saw were nice, and the people were nice.

I agree. I could possibly be moving to Sheffield (or wherever DB gets into uni) and I haven't visited there yet.

Manchester is awesome, I have been here since 1993 and I have never once heard the phrase "gunchester". I live in South Manchester and its great, we have all the mod cons within 10-15 minutes drive and imo its not all that different from living in the states. The city has changed an incredible amount in the time I have been here, and its constantly evolving. The people are fabulously friendly, I have an amazing group of friends, both Manc and transplants, getting around is easy, driving is easy, I love the people (did I say that already?) and in general, I think (for me) its the best place to live in the UK!! You can live an urban lifestyle and be in the beautiful countryside in 20 minutes, there is great food, the cost of living is not as high as some other places in the UK, and in general, I think its great. But I could be biased. I have never been as happy anywhere as I have been in my years in Manchester.

I lived in Manchester as an exchange student. I lived on Oxford Rd, and for me the location was perfect--within walking distance to everything I needed. (My classrooms and the bar I worked at were literally across the street! hehe)

It's a very compact city, the city centre isn't too spread out, and can be easily explored.--  You say you've been to other places in the UK--what areas have you visited? I could compare Manc to London/Nottingham/Leicester if you wanted.

The Magic buses there are the cheapest I've seen in the UK. Three years ago, it was only ~60p per ride, but prices have probably changed since.

I only really experienced student life there though, and since there are both Uni of Manchester, and Manchester Metropolitan, there are loads of students during term time--going out to bars and clubs, etc.  I didn't like the majority of people there, BUT, they were all students, from different places...And, i did end up falling in love with one of my hallmates on accident! :D

There's plenty to do, and always something going on. I haven't heard it called "gunchester", but there are always places to avoid in a big city.  I generally steered clear of Moss Side, as it had a bad reputation, but when I did walk through that area, there was never anybody around.  In the city centre, there are quite a few chavs, asking for your money and that sort of thing...

But it all depends where you're living really.  Look into it to find yourself a nice area before being overly "gutsy"

Live there! In Victoria Park (near Rusholme and the curry mile!).  Love it. If I want to go the ballet, the IMAX showing of Avatar, or a great restaurant, I can do that.  And it still only takes me twenty minutes to get out to gorgeous countryside and horseback riding.  There's the opera and an AMAZING music scene. Super easy to get around, even without a car (although nice to have), and the Magic bus fares are only 80p now! So not that much more. I've never felt unsafe anywhere I normally go, but it is a big city.  They've actually had much better crime statistics recently, I think.

There ARE students everywhere during term time (I think there are more students traveling up and down Oxford Road than were in all of upper education in the 60's? or something like that), but really, it's not that bad. Of course, I work for the University of Manchester, so I'm predisposed not to mind them!

How are you going to live here? Have you thought about a visa yet?

Well said, I think that makes all the difference. I'm moving to Sheffield without having any clue what it's like, but at least I'll be with DB!
