Skype on a phone
« on: February 01, 2010, 11:44:30 PM »
Not sure if this is the right place to put this, but I'll give it a whirl.

DB is getting a new phone(htc hero) and it has skype features. How does skype work on a phone? Does anyone else have this phone and use skype from it?

My DB has an iPhone that he uses Skype on.  I'm not sure how it compares to the HTC Hero. But, in order to use skype on an iphone, he has to connect to a wireless network before making calls through skype--ie: his service provider (O2) won't allow him to connect to skype through their network and then make a call...if that makes sense..He has to connect to the wireless networks at home/work/wherever else and then sign onto skype.

I hope that helps!  :-\\\\ I'm not sure how useful I am at explaining, but it's probably simple...I've just never had to do it.

I wanted to get an HTC smart phone, but didn't want to pay the extra $$/month for internet, which apparently verizon forces you to have. :(  Let me know how he likes it!

Will do!

So just from him having Skype on his phone, he'll be able to make cheap phone calls to me from his phone?
If I have a Skype number and he has a Skype number, isn't it free or something? I'm sooo confused on how it all works! Haha!

I have skype on my mobile. If you go through the 3 company, it's all free. I can receive calls from other skype screennames, but if someone uses my skype-out number it doesn't work for some reason... We're looking into that, but frankly we're lazy. ;)

I have a skype subscription to call any US number unlimited for a year. That works great! So I end up calling my mom or my best friend when I'm just walking around.

It works through the wireless internet on your mobile phone.  So, if you have a wireless package already included in your tarrif you only pay the Skype fee setup on your Skype account.

So if he has Skype on his mobile and I call from my mobile to his Skype on his phone, will it be cheaper?

It could potentially be, if the person you're calling has wireless internet on their phone and the Skype programme installed.  Otherwise they'd potentially be paying through the teeth if they don't have an internet package.   :P

ETA:  If you know the make & model of your UK Mobile you may want to check with Skype to see if it's compatible with the Skype Mobile programme.   ;)  http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/mobile/  (check the bottom half - the mobile # submission is to have a text sent to you to download the programme which you will most likely be charged to download by your provider.)

As someone else said, it depends on the network and the wireless internet package! On the 3-network Skype and MSN messengers are completely free. But that's because the phone just goes through the internet (apparently).

This is all so confusing, and it's crazy how each network has their own rules... On verizon, sending messages through MSN only counts as a text message (which i absolutely love!).  So I use that to tell my DB to call me through skype! haha.  Whatever works, right?

Totally. My closest friend from home has MSN on her Verizon phone, so we talk through that all the time. MSN sometimes doesn't work on 3. You have to be in an area with good signal... But then it just works like the messenger on your computer! Same with Skype. And it's completely free. But yeah, doesn't always work. (Skype does work a lot better than MSN, but sometimes I have to fiddle with it.)
