Reducing Student Loan Repayment - IBR
« on: February 16, 2011, 07:43:36 PM »
I've done some searching, but I haven't found any threads on this topic.

I was wondering if anyone living in the UK has any experience with IBR (Income Based Repayment). Is it even possible to sign up to this program if you live abroad?  ???

I've looked at the form, but unfortunately it is as clear as mud!

TIA!   :)

I don't know about IBR, but I was able to get an unemployment-based deferment while living here.  I had no idea if it would work, but I faxed in the forms anyway.  And sure enough it did.  So you might want to give it a try.  The worst that can happen is they don't approve it.  Good luck.

I'm going to have to phone them soon to sort mine out, so if I get an answer I'll post it.

No probs. I'm going to do my taxes and send out the forms next week. I'll let you know what happens! :)

I was granted IBR by Sallie Mae. Sent in the forms and it was approved about a month later. ;)

Hello

I have been in the UK for about 5 years now.  I havent filed a US tax return in the last 5 years which is another issue I am dealing with!  Will this affect the likelihood of being granted IBR do you think?  Did you explicitly tell them you were living in UK?  I was considering moving back to US (which I don't want to) just to be eligible for IBR!  I am earning less than £7000 pa in UK at the moment.  Looking for better paid job.  Any tips greatly appreciated

There are other ways of showing your income, but given how much you are making you really need to submit a copy of your 1040. I don't think your tax issues will have any bearing on your IBR. But who knows? Give your loan provider a call to clarify this. I just submited a copy of my 2010 1040 and that was sufficent.

They know I am in the UK. It didn't seem to be a problem either way.
