Do dog friendly flats exist in London???
« on: July 14, 2010, 06:22:13 PM »
I've read over previous threads, but I was just wondering if anyone had any recent experience finding a dog friendly flat in London.  My boyfriend had to move back for his job and I'll be moving at the end of November with my dachshund, so he's doing the flat searching.

We've tried everything - offering more money p/w, extra deposit, having the flat professionally cleaned, letters of reference from previous landlords and we've had no luck.  We tried the form email magikalcattie posted, but only received emails back from the estate agents saying they did not have any pet friendly rentals.

I've rented in Manhattan for years with my dog and I've never encountered anything like this.  We're looking in the Bayswater/Paddington area, in case that makes any difference.

You may want to try private rentals or move further out.

I am going to be in London(attending Kingston Uni) for six months starting Oct 1.  Currently I am in the States and went to London for a week early August to secure a place.  I had contacted a dozen or more letting agents before I left.  Most were of no help whatsoever.  I ended up finding a nice little house with a fenced in garden and doggy door on Gumtree.  I kept checking Gumtree and most of those people did not answer me, I think this was total luck and it worked out fine.  I did pay six months up front and a large deposit.  I have two small elderly dogs.
It is not easy but doable.  Letting agents did take me to a couple of places which they said they would have to contact the landlord to see if they wanted dogs, but I did not have time to wait around for the landlord to get back to us.  One place had three cats and I was pretty sure they would have taken dogs and another landlord did say it would have been ok, I just did not really like the place.
My place is slightly outside of London, I dont know if that makes a difference or not.  Good luck, something will come up for you.

I'm not in London, but live in a large metropolitan area and we have friends who have just gone through the process of trying to find a flat where the landlord would accept their huge Maine Coon cat. They found that all furnished places would absolutely refuse but unfurnished flats had about a 50/50 chance of the landlord being okay with it. I don't know if you're in a position to get an unfurnished flat but I think this would likely up your chances.
I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

Hassina, I'm glad you found a place.  I know from our private correspondence that jaclynmck has found a place too.

I know it can seem overwhelming at first, but things do work out eventually!  I've written up my experience in detail, so please do check the archives for my advice on what worked (for me).

Lanikai,

Your postings were most helpful!  I remember them way back when I started my search.

Yes, my boyfriend was finally able to find a flat, though for the amount that he's paying, he thinks we could definitely do better.  So, the plan is to start looking for another flat when I (hopefully) go over in November.  I'll be over there with my dog so I'm hoping I'll be able to follow Lanikai's lead and bring him along to look at flats.

I had a hard time in Leeds as well finding a flat that would take my dog.  I was about ready to rent a house further out and commute in - but I lucked out.  I do find that properties with gardens seem much more likely to take dogs then those without.
