question about timelines
« on: February 07, 2010, 10:25:32 AM »
Hi everyone,

My husband and I are thinking about moving back to the US but I have a couple of quick questions before we start getting stuck under piles of paperwork...

1. How long is the process taking in general, from sending off the application to getting the visa? My husband and I have been married for over three years (he is the UK citizen, I'm from the US but have just gotten dual citizenship) and there wouldn't be any problems with the application ie no criminal records, denied visas, etc.

2. We were planning on travelling for a few months in between leaving the UK and going to the US, mainly because we would really like to travel around the world and this seems like the best time to do it. Would they be able to delay the visa for a few months so that we can travel (plus have enough time to quit our jobs, move etc.) or would it be best to wait to travel once we officially get into the US? We're planning on travelling for about 3 months.

Would appreciate any input you have, this process looks pretty daunting!

Thanks,
Michelle

DCF typically, at least in the UK, runs between 3 and 6 months from start to finish. Ours was about 4.5 months. Once you get it you have 6 months to activate it, meaning the UKC has to enter the US within 6 months of getting the green card. If you want to travel for 3 months you would be fine, or you can enter the US, activate it, and then travel.
