Shipped items -- not marked as gift. Customs charges?
« on: February 24, 2010, 06:07:20 PM »
My dad just sent me a box of my clothes from the US, and despite telling him over and over that he needed to mark "USED" on the listing of items in the box, he didn't do it -- he just listed out the items and their value.  Any idea how bad customs is going to be?  He put a value of $225 on the customs form.  Ugh.

I called HMRC a couple of months ago to ask about what sort of charge would be incurred if I bought an iPhone case from overseas and had it shipped to the UK.  They have an incredibly detailed list of items and codes, and the amount of the customs charge would vary according to what the item is exactly.  For example, I thought that all leather goods would be one category, but in fact not only was there a category for "leather mobile phone case", he also asked me to be more specific...did the case have a snap-type closure?   Umm, I think it's a magnetic closure, I said, but I'm not really sure.  But actually the customs duty rate on the item was nominal, just 3%, *however* he said that import VAT would also be charged, so that's 17.5%.  So you may get charged the VAT on $225, plus whatever small amount of customs charge there is.  Though I hope not, I hope they just let it slip through for you!

Ugh, I hope so.  Thanks.  I tried looking around the HMRC site as well as Royal Mail and there was just a lot of discussion of "you may be charged" and not much on the actual amount.  Ugh.  I really hope I don't have to pay 3% + 17.5%.  I'm so frustrated, and can't say anything because he was doing me a favor and I'm pretty sure he just forgot.

Thanks again.  I guess I just need to see what happens when it shows up.   :-\\\\

Plus Royal Mail's "handling fee" for negotiating the customs charges on your behalf!

Remember, you can always refuse the parcel and have it sent back to your Dad, who can fill out the customs form correctly the second time around. Not to say this isn't without its own costs in familial strife and delays, but if you haven't got the cash (and the delivery guys I've dealt with have always demanded cash, returning later that day so I can run to the cashpoint!), it is another option.
