UK: Odeon ends Alice in Wonderland boycott

YEAH, YEAH, YEAH, I have been waiting for this movie to come out and was heartbroken when I saw the Odeon theater chain was boycotting (the 1 and only theater here is Odean). YEAH, YEAH, YEAh!

I think this is such an interesting story. I can't figure out who I want to side for but I do like the fact that it's the cinemas against the studios this time.

I just want to avoid all of the crap and arguments between the big boys over big boy things.

I am hoping to go to our local independent, as it is lovely!

Hear hear. We have a fantastic little local which is so old fashioned that I don't even mind the seats are so uncomfortable.  They even have a Ticket-o-Matic which looks like it came from the 50's.

I never heard there was any fuss about it.   Anyone got a link to fill me in? I love Tim Burton films (and especially if Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are in) so I am excited to see it.  

Yay! I love Johnny Depp and saw him several times in the 80s in his 21 Jump Street days.

Ooh, are we? I'm so bad with keeping track of who lives nearby and who doesn't. How fantastic that we're talking about the same place! I did see a poster up, so I'm guessing they'll show it. They're showing The Red Shoes soon. I'd love to see that in the cinema.

I don't have a link right now but essentially the film company (I think it's Disney) want to put it to DVD in 3 months (rather than the usual 6 months), the cinemas object to such a short time frame for a movie going to DVD as they think it will put some people off going to teh cinema knowing they'll be abla to get the DVD in a short period of time.

I have been following this for a while so may I add, the normal time for movies to be in the theaters is 17 weeks or roughly 4 months, Disney wants to start releasing DVDs in the 12th week and decided to test to see how the cinemas would react so they choice Alice in Wonderland.  The UK cinema's reacted in near unity saying no.  Cineworld however backed out after Disney said they would release DVDs at week 13.  In the mean time, cinema's in the Netherlands and Belgium joined the protests and AMC (second largest cinema in the US) is making the threat as well.  

In the end the UK cinemas and Disney struck a deal.  The Netherlands and Belgium and still at it and I don't know the status of AMC.  *** disney claims this is to curb piracy of movies.
