Weird symptoms when stressed
« on: March 19, 2010, 03:30:17 PM »
Lately, whenever I'm stressed , I develop a huge rash covering the back and side of my neck and I also get really bad chronic stomach pains.

Is this normal? I dont want to go to the doctor or anything like that, so is there a remedy to stop this from happening? ....Other then "dont get stressed"  :P

Yes. You can get hives from stress and you can get stomach pains from stress.

Maybe an antihistamine would work for the hives?

Otherwise, either don't get stressed (sorry) or do the typical things that people do to relieve stress - meditation, aromatherapy, exercise, etc.

I have never had the rash but the stomach pains are an old familiar for me.  Currently the body is leaving the stomach alone and is showing the stress through back pains or at least that is what I think is causing these pains.

For the stomach use ginger.  If you have some ginger root, chop it up and put it in some hot water with honey and/or sugar and drink.  Trust me it makes a world of a difference.  If you can find some crystallized ginger candy that would help to.  Pop a few when you feel the pain coming on.  I know it sounds strange but it works.  Also banana's are good, they are an alkaline food and counter the acid.

Of course taking the stress out is the best bet but if you can't these are some natural ways to treat the symptoms. :-)

It sounds like hives. DH gets them whenever he's stressed. We didn't know what they were at first- thought it was an allergic reaction.

Be careful with them on your neck. They can cause the throat to swell/close. DH had that happen and ended up in the er- scary stuff. He has two Meds now to use as needed.

My son got hives caused by severe stress when we first came over to the UK to visit prospective schools, which meant he had to be assessed and spend the day at 4 different schools.  I noticed the rash before we left home and got medicine but by the time he got to the last school he was covered head to toe in an awful rash and we had to take him to see a doctor. They prescribed a stronger medicine so we took him back to the school and when we picked him his fingers hands and feet were so swollen he could hardly walk.  so back to the doctor who sent him directly to the hospital to see a specialist.  He was soon sent home and the next day the rash started to disappear as he had no more schools to visit and we were on our way back to London to visit friends for a day then catch a flight home.

I used to get hives in response to severe stress and the doctor prescribed Benedryl (the over the counter one, so I guess it wasn't a prescription but more of a recommendation). He said hives were basically an allergy of the skin and it's always done the trick.

I would say though, that if this is a common response for you to see a doctor because all you are doing is reducing the symptom, not addressing the cause. I don't get hives any more but I'm also older now and things don't bother me as much. :)

I've had hives from being stressed.  I've also had to get teeth crowned due to cracking from jaw clenching when I was stressed.  I actually had to have a dental procedure to even out the pressure on my teeth so I'd reduce the chances of cracking more from jaw clenching.
