Moving my Two dogs...
« on: December 16, 2009, 04:14:45 PM »
So after much research, I'm nearly ready to get my dogs started. I'm planning their first vet visit for January to get the Microchip + rabies vaccine.  So nervous that something will not be done right, as I've already moved to Scotland and can't check every single little detail myself.

I'm hoping some of you may have shipped two dogs together in the same crate before and can give me some advice on this. On one site I read that they must weigh within 30lbs of one another to travel in the same crate. I have a miniature dachshund and a Aussie/Border collie mix. I think my doxie weights about 15lbs and the Aussie maybe 40lbs? I'm having my Mom weigh them tonight when she gets home.

According to the defra website, they'll be traveling British Airways from Phoenix to London. Anyone else who has used this route, approx how much did you pay?

Also, if anyone can give me any suggestions on a good crate that would accommodate them together I would greatly appreciate it.

I will update this thread as things happen. I've had my FLR(M) since early October, and I still don't have a job... and basically that is what this whole thing is riding on! Ugh. But I'm feeling confident about the new year, I've applied for lots of jobs and I know I can make this happen. I miss my dogs so very much.

I've not flown 2 dogs together, but as a frame of reference, I flew my dog (30lbs) from Denver to Heathrow and paid $1060.  Price is determined by crate size AND weight and dont forget to include the weight of the crate when you call the airline to make your reservation.

IMO, the best crates are the Petmate brand which you can get at Petsmart.  Take a look here for BA crate guidelines http://cyuat.baplc.com/biztools/pcst.shtml

I just got off the phone with British Airways to get a new quote ($2,114 to ship a 60lb dog in an XL crate and a 12lb cat in a S crate, for reference). While I was on the phone I asked about dogs sharing a kennel and it's only allowed if both dogs are < 6 months old. (Which wouldn't be possible via the PETS scheme anyway, as it takes 6 months.)

You'll want to call them yourself to get quotes. If it's British Airways, their # is 888-578-4806 and they're open 9-5 EST Monday to Friday.

For crates, I'm guessing your Aussie could fit in a M or L crate, and the doxie in a S, but you'll need to measure them...the airline wants them to have so much head room, be able to stand up/lie down/turn around easily, etc. I'm purposefully going a bit large so that I don't have to deal with any questions of whether the crates are big enough when I'm at the airport checking them in.

Hope this helps!

I had 2 dogs but they weren't flown together even though they are smaller dogs.  I was not even given that option.  I did mark the crates so that you could notice there were 2 of the same ( wrote 1 of 2 and 2 of 2 on the crates).  I'm no animal behavior expert, but I think mine were probably able to relax much better on their own.  I had a 14lb yorkie and a 27lb terrier mix.  My total bill was $1700 for shipping costs.  Hope this helps :)

when i talked to continental i was told that they are not allowed to share a crate unless they are puppies....less than 6 mths old as equestrianerd stated......i was also informed that they are not allowed any form of sedative.....that immediately ruled flying out for my chihuahuas.......i cant seperate them....my older one wouldnt survive the flight......ive chosen to go over on the QM2-only 300 per dog and i get to visit them as much as i need.

I am going on the QM2 with my two dogs as well.  Even though the fare for humans is a bit more the fare for dogs is quite cheap(300 per dog).   I feel they will be better off on the boat.  The only downfall to the boat is you have to book far in advance as the kennel spaces fill up quickly.  Cunard also helps you with your paperwork making sure all is in order.
