Erm...Cheerio and Toodle Pip!
« on: April 30, 2010, 11:55:24 AM »
;) That is me trying to use the ol' British lingo (you should hear my British accent--it is quite authentic!  :D)!

I have thought of joining this website for some time now (about a year) and have finally decided to!

I am an aspiring writer who is originally from California and who has been living in the U.K. for over 3 years now. What brought me here one might ask? Well, love did...I met and fell in love with a charming and 'wonderfie' Brit--the earth trembled, every star alighted in the sky and thus, we got engaged! I first came to England on a fiancee visa, we wed here overseas and was then upgraded to a marriage visa and as of last June, I became a holder of, 'Indefinite Leave To Remain'.

As of January this year, I became a mother to our own little, 'Ameri-Brit hybrid'--a beautiful and radiant baby boy. We recently applied for his U.K. Passport and are awaiting its arrival in the mail.

Oh and I miss home quite a bit! I have my gripes about Britain (oh boy do I!) though it is a fine country--a lovely one in many aspects...But of course, one inherently tends to miss their roots--their families...I come from an especially beauteous place back home too...

I have to say when I hear/see my fellow Americans travelling about--I think rather nostagically of them as my 'kin'! So hello, fellow "Yankee-Doodle-Dandies"--it is spiffy to meet you all!  :)

I don't want to rain on your parade, and I suspect you were kind of joking, but nobody here has used "toodle pip" since about 1925... and anyhow it means "goodbye"... so does "cheerio"...

I was thinking the same thing myself.

Anyway, to the OP...welcome to UKY!

My hubby's grandad (he's in his late 80s and quite old-fashion) uses these.  Makes me laugh.   ;D

People say both in my office. All the time. I'm not even exaggerating! But yes, they do say them for goodbye rather than hello. Anyway..... shouldn't you be giving this lovely lady a warm welcome instead?!  ::)

Welcome to UKY... nevermind the grumpy folks lurking around.   ;) Good to have you!

Yes, you're right! Welcome! It's just that there was a time when I thought I was au fait with "British" slang and I got myself some very odd looks indeed, I wanted to spare the OP that pain... And believe me, nothing sounds odder that a N. American sprinking their speech with glottal stops...

Yeah, I realised they mean, "Goodbye"--after I posted  and am functioning on nil sleep here with a young baby--so please excuse the faux pas! I think I still have a bit of residual 'pregnancy brain' as well! My husband actually uses both quite a bit and he is only in his early 30s!

A warmer reception is always nice--but we Americans are outspoken--so it's okay if folks feel like being grumpy! But thanks for kindly chiming in, "Jewlz"--I appreciate it!

I just posted as to my son automatically being a dual citizen and I already figured he was...But what I did not know was that he cannot visit the U.S. without a passport of U.S. origin and that I had to register his birth with the U.S. Embassy! I appreciate your linking me to that thread, "WebyJ"! And we had just applied for his British Passport last week, which is presently being processed! We just phoned and could not get an appointment to the U.S. Embassy until early June and we need to visit the U.S. as soon as we can since my mother has taken ill with a heart condition!

As to lighter matters...I live along the southern coast of England...Am currently in Hampshire, but am moving to West Sussex next month.

keep checking back at the Embassy.  I managed to get my daughter an appointment for two days after I looked b/c of a cancellation.  If you keep checking, you may find a cancelled appt.

Welcome to UKY!  Feel free to check out the pregnancy and parenting board.  I've found it very helpful with my little one.
