Good Book
« on: June 25, 2004, 10:23:06 AM »
I have just finished a very good and touching book (true story)

It is called "A child called it"   it was really good but a bit disturbing if you are a very sensitive person.

I have also ordered the 2 books that follow this one "the lost boy" and "a man named dave"

Cant wait for them to get here so I can finish the story.

I read those.

"Child Called It" and "The Lost Boy" were pretty good...but by the time you get to "A Man Named Dave" it really slides into glommy self-help stuff and loses the tension.  Worth a read, but I'm glad I borrowed them instead of buying them.

I read the books. The first two were indeed very disturbing. I was more disturbed by the fact that a mother could do that to her own child.
There are two things in life for which we are never truly prepared:  twins.

The first book in this series made me physically sick and gave me bad dreams. I have seldom been as deeply moved by a book; it was actually traumatic for me. I think if you plan to read one you should you should read them all to see how Dave pulls through.

aboslutely agree. the books are well worth a read, but only if you read all three. the first two are tense and illustrative of a terrible ill of our society, but the thirdf allows for the reader to see a character progression past the pain.
if it isn't one thing, its my mother . . .

I read the first two, but I think the first was the most powerful.  There is a British "version" of this sort of story (child abuse, foster homes) but for the life of me can't remember the name of it (although I thinkit was a best seller when I left in April).

There is also a book called "Other People's Children" by Jennifer Tothe (she wrote The Mole People) which follows I think five foster children through their lives. Very moving and well told.

p.s. I'm suddenly doubting the exact names I wrote above, so they may be a bit off.
