change of plans!!
« on: September 04, 2004, 12:36:35 AM »
After researching and deciding to go over on a student visa to England and just get my Masters right away, theres a change of plans....because my boyfriend proposed on August 15th....I'm engaged!  ;D
On top of the billion questions and tasks that a wedding involves naturally, now I have the whole visa/which country/etc stuff to deal with. ???
so instead of driving everyone insane with a million questions I am going to do most of the research my own, once I get this one piece of starting info (I hope!)
I know that to get married in the UK, i'd need to go over on a fiancee visa since you cant go and get married as a visitor anymore (heard that law came into effect last year)
Fiance(e) visas are roughly 500 dollars....
are they cheaper if we get married in the states and he needs a visa? Or is it even wise to get married here in the states if we intend on living in england? any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

he doesn't need a visa to get married in the states as long as he isn't going to live there and can prove it. if it's important for you to be married in the states, you could get married there then get your spouse visa (you can get it in a day if you go in person) and then fly to england to live. if you want to be married in england then yes, you have to get the fiance visa which allows you to be married there and continue to live there while you change your status (no going back to the states for any visas) --once you are married you have to then get the spouse visa and so on...

oh and congrats!

AHHH!!! THATS GREAT!!!!  congrats!!!!!     :) ;) ;D 8) ;D :Dyou can still get married in scotland on a visitor waiver... i'm doing it on sept 17th but you would still have to go back to states to get your spousal visa ... so if you can wait a lil longer to see your sweetie ( which I couldn't was way way way too miserable ) go for that  fiance visa then come over or get married in the states and apply for the spousal...
It's the difference between knowing the path and walking the path.

Interesting deal
She'll do it. If she has to kill everyone in this room. She'll do it. She's in love.
*sigh*
It's amazing how the path of love is so alike to the path of insanity

congratulations!!!!!! always nice to hear good things like this!!!
in my personal opinion, it just seems cheaper, easier, andmore practical to get married and then get the spousal visa, then to get a fiance visa...and pay more again for the spousal visa once you're there and married....
am I wrong in thinking that the money has to be spent twice?

Thanks everyone.  ;D

Its good to hear that we can get married in the states. My family is Serbian Orthodox and its very important to them that I get married in my church. The only problem is we dont really want to get married until 2006, but I want to go over still in 2005 as originally planned. Maybe I should stick with the student visa after all, for now!
