How much $ did you take when you moved back to the UK?
« on: August 13, 2004, 07:40:30 PM »
We have been thinking of moving back to the uk for about two years. In this time my husband (English) has been agonizing over it as he knows what we have here and what we would have over there. I'd like to know how much money you had when you moved back to the UK? His aunt moved back with $30000.00 and was 59 years old, she is now back in Canada as she couldn't find work so no one would give her a mortage. We would be moving near Aldershot Hampshire as he always has a job to go back to. Even if we only stay till he finds something better. We may have a house in Alton as his dad has his parents home that is sitting empty. Any help would be greatly helpful.

Well right off the bat that 30K will turn into roughly 17K due to the exchange rates. (And, I took more than that with me) :-[ :-\\\\  For me, moving to the UK was a very expensive yearlong holiday. IMO, things were more expensive and the job I had paid about ΒΌ of what I was earning in the States. Needless to say I am back in the states and the bank account took a severe beating.  :-\\\\

This is a good thread, I've often wondered the same.  I know my husband would have a job before we go since his old boss told him he would, but I often wonder how we would afford a house!  My mother-in-law would be selling hers soon, but who knows if we could afford it.  We'd have to live close to London for my husbands job, and who knows what kind of job I'd have.

I know its more expensive, but when he came to the states all we had was a job for him and $2000. That paid for our rent and food until we were able to get his pay checks. I didn't work as I had just had a baby. So we did it with just that.

We now have a house, two cars, two kids and a heck of a lot of crap that I know we would not be able to take to the UK. For example, sectional sofa, 53 inch tv, cars, snow blower, washer, dryer and other items that wouldn't make sense to pay to take over. There are things we would want to take with us, but as I know its expensive to do so, I have been really thinking of what I would really need.

I worked at a kitchen store and have 5 different types of muffin pans, I know I wouldn't need them all. Plus I have four sets of dishes. One is my china so I wouldn't take that right away but could forgo with the other two and so on.

If anyone could help with this question I would be thankfull!
