head table seating?
« on: August 13, 2010, 05:28:06 PM »
my Fiance are talking about the head table. our situation makes things a little different.

my mother is the only person from my side that is able to make the wedding, so i've asked her to be my my Maid of Honor. that means that traditionally, she would be sitting up at the head table. (well, as my mother she would be anyway) anyway, so, on my fiance's side of the table, it would be his best man, his mom and his dad, then my side would only be my mom. the table would look like this (x's are his family o's are mine)

xxxXOo

so, that looks weird. and not only that, i really want my mom to sit next to his parents because chances are, it's going to be the only time they'll get to know each other.

anyway, that means that if his parents and my parents sit at a normal table in the front, it would just be us and his best man... SO would it be totally weird if his best man sat with his girlfriend at a normal table too, leaving just the two of us at the head table.

is that totally weird? i can't think of any other way to do it that wouldn't look strange, but i think either way it's going to be odd. do you think people would think we were snobby or something having the head table all to ourselves?

thanks!

Do you have to have a long table as your head table? We did round tables thus eliminating any issues of who was on which side. Plus, that way people can have more of a conversation.

If not, I say do whatever you want. It's your day.  :)

I vote round tables as well. If it has to be a long table then you could throw tradition to the wind and sit them across from you. If you could either

- put the best man next to your fiance and the three parents across,  which sounds very symetrical on paper

- put your mother next to you and the groom's side across (that way your mother is across from his mother or father and can talk more easily and you get to sit in the middle

Though, at the weddings I've been to, the bride and groom get to spend very little time actually sitting down and a lot more time wandering around thanking everyone for coming so you could do a sweetheart table for the two of you and put the other four at a different table altogether.

Like chary, we did round tables.  My husband only had his mom at the wedding, too, so we just sat everyone in the round, but our table was in the middle of the room (we did only have 30 people, so that made more sense for us).

Otherwise, like noirem mentioned, you could just do a sweetheart table and put them at one of the other tables together, so they could talk easier with each other.

At the end of the day, there are no real rules anymore when it comes to weddings, so do whatever feels right to you and your groom.  Most importantly, do what allows you to enjoy the day the most.   :D

thank you all for your replies!

the hotel that's holding our reception doesn't have round tables.

i think we're just going to go with the small two person table at the front. we're only having around 30 guests so i think whatever we do will be intimate anyway. and i really want our parents to be able to get to know each other.

thank you all again!
