Hostel Advice (London NW)
« on: May 03, 2010, 05:11:57 PM »
Hello all!

It seems ages since the last time I posted. Anyhow, I'm about to buy a plane ticket to London and hopefully be there the 1st week of July. My query goes as follow:

As I'm in a veeeery low budget I'm looking to stay in a hostel for a month, or so, while I sort out a job. I've found two hostels I like and are inside my budget. I was wondering if any of you could tell me a bit about the area they are located and/or if you know the hostels.

All Star Hostel (Chatsworth Rd, Kilburn, NW2 4BL) http://bit.ly/byj7Io
London Backpackers (Queens Parade, Queens Road, Hendon Central, NW4 3NS) http://bit.ly/cCTNxD

Thanks so much for all your help  :)

What's your budget?

I would be inclined to go with something that is affiliated with the Youth Hostelling Association myself, for a sense of extra security.

Kilburn is historically an Irish neighbourhood and has in the past, been known to be rough and ready, but I have always liked the vibe of it and worked in that area 10 years ago. To learn about the neighbourhoods, I'd punch in the postcode into upmystreet.

Good luck and HTH.  :)

Thanks for the info :D

My budget is £18 per night max (ideally a 6 bed dorm) . Not bother if there's no breakfast, but must have a guest kitchen. I know is very low for London, but really can't afford more if I intend to get there jobless  :-\\\\

Do you need to be in the Northwest?  I stayed in a hostel in South Kensington last year that was pretty nice, great location, and not expensive.  It was part of Hostel World, so probably the others in that group are decent as well, but I don't have any personal experience with them.  Here's where I stayed http://www.astorhostels.co.uk/#/en/page/kensington/About/

Hi historyenne!

I liked the hostels in NW cause they had more reviews with comments like "family feeling" or "short term rental". I'm a bit worried about having a bunch of teenagers going bonkers at night [smiley=blank.gif]. The one you posted is actually one of the best rated in Hostel World :), thanks for the recommendation.

I guess the things that worries me the most is my stuff. I'm planning on taking as much as I can on a single 50 lb duffel-bag plus laptop, camera etc. Though, I have no idea if London will be the place I will find a job, so I considered a hostel to be the best option while I get settled.

Wasn't your partner in Leeds?

What field are you looking for work in? Maybe post on the job board / housing board and people can suggest where to look for jobs in your field in areas you want to live so you don't feel necessarily tied to London.  :)

O_O

6 bed hostel rooms aren't very safe if you have lots of stuff! I was in one in NYC and my watch fell off during the night, I heard it clunk but was too tired to get it, when I woke up (early) in the morning it was gone.

I hope you've thought about some options of where you want to keep stuff, even with lockers etc hostels can be dens of thieves.

Maybe a short term rental from spareroom.co.uk would be better?

Have you checked out the Univ. of London halls of residence? I believe they are still available for short term stay over the summer vac.  I don't know how the rates would compare to other facilities.

Yes.

I initially stayed in hostels back when I did BUNAC. Hostels can be full of people with no moral compunction against stealing other people's things. Sadly, I experienced this firsthand.

A few tips:

Put a lock on everything. Use combination locks instead of key locks. One, you won't have keys to lose, and two, key locks are easily picked. Combination locks can be cracked, too, but it takes a bit more time.

The hostel may advertise "lockers available," but this can mean different things. One hostel I stayed in said this, but what that meant was one lockable cage per bunk bed unit. If your bunkmate got there first and took it, you were out of luck.

Try to avoid using a standard-looking laptop case for your laptop. It advertises, "hey, I have a laptop." Many backpacks have laptop areas, or you can purchase laptop bags that are designed like backpacks. Lock it.

I slept with my handbag under my pillow. I kept my iPod and camera in my handbag. Take it to the shower with you. You have no idea who your roommates are or what kind of people they are. Thieves are opportunistic.

Take your laptop with you when you leave the room. If you don't want to take it out with you every day, leave it in the hotel luggage room. Only the hotel staff has keys and you can only retrieve your bags with a claim check. Not all hostels have luggage rooms. Check before booking to see if yours does.

Thank you all for all the advice, means a lot.

Sadly, we are no longer together, the whole LD relationship made us fall apart. Haven't seen him in a year. So, this time I am all on my own.

I'm an environmental consultant (6 years of professional experience), a BSc in chemical engineering with a MSc in Sustainability. I know I should be able to fin a job, maybe not with the 40K per year that I need to renew the visa  [smiley=mean.gif]...

Maybe a short term rental from spareroom.co.uk would be better?

I did think of that, but the deposit, reference contacts... I haven't been in the UK for about 18 months. But I would give it a second look, you never know. I remember seeing some single moms or young couples advertising rooms. I wouldn't mind tbh.

Oh wow, thanks so much for the tip. I will look it up over the weekend.

Thank you so much for all the tips. I think I might ask some friends in London to keep my stuff and just carry around cloths and bathroom things (they all live in such tiny spaces, so it's just not an option to crash their place).

This is also a great site -

http://www.airbnb.com/

We're renting a flat for my DB's parents when they come to stay in June, lovely place in Hammersmith, two bed for about $800, you'd never find a hotel that cheap.

You could do something like this -
http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/27173?price=27.0&r[checkin]=2010-06-20&r[checkout]=2010-06-26&r[city]=London&r[country]=GB&r[currency]=USD&r[language]=0&r[lat]=51.5001524&r[lng]=-0.1262362&r[location]=London,+GB&r[max_price]=&r[min_price]=&r[neighborhood]=&r[number_of_guests]=1&r[precision]=city&r[seo_city]=london&r[seo_other]=gb&r[sort_by]=1&r[state]=Greater+London

which is $27 a day and just on your budget of £18 a day, no deposit or references required.

I've stayed there! :) It's a really cool place, and it is full of young people who are there looking for work and there for an extended period of time. However, all those steps can be killer! ;)
