can anyone clarify funding query for me?
« on: April 28, 2010, 04:54:07 PM »
My oldest son and I live her permanently via ILR visas (youngest and hubby are British).

My oldest is wrapping up his GCSE years here now, and as he's about to start A-Levels I've had a sudden panic!

I can't seem to confirm via random chat online where we fall as residents but non-citizens for when he completes Y13 here.

As a resident only, will he qualify for the usual student loan for tuition, any government grants, etc. for books, transport, etc and/or any bursaries or scholarships here?

Each case that I find online seems to always have a unique twist to it so I'm not clear if my son qualifies as it stands or if we need to trudge through the citizenship process.

Please advise if you are wise in this area  :-\\\\

Many thanks in advance (and not sure 100% if I posted this in the correct area either, as we permanently live and are residents in the UK???)!

Regarding A levels, how long has your oldest son been living here and how long has he held ILR? Are you talking about educational maintenance allowance?

Have you considered talking to his further education college for clarification? http://yp.direct.gov.uk/14-19prospectus/

The same rules as for uni may apply.

Regarding university, assuming he finishes his GCSEs this year and then does his A levels (AS + A2) from 2010 - 2012 and that he would apply for an autumn start to uni in 2012, he should be eligible for home fees, as he should have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years and hold ILR by the time he applies to uni to be eligible for home fees.

See http://www.ukcisa.org.uk/student/information_sheets.php#tuition_fees

I'd still get citizenship done and dusted, as soon as you are eligible. Fees will only ever go up in the world of visas, in my experience! And it allows you peace of mind and security living in the UK and even the EU.

HTH. Beat of luck!  :)

Thank you for being able to read between the lines since I forgot to say this was regarding Uni after 6th form!!

We have been here nearly 5 years and held the ILR for about a year now.

All of your information and links has been incredibly helpful - THANK YOU!!
