Getting Started
« on: August 15, 2004, 06:55:54 PM »
For those of you couples who moved back to the UK from the US, how did you get started?  That's often my concern, and I think my husbands concern as well.  We're pretty settled here in the US, but have been thinking about moving back to the UK for some time now, and once we start thinking of houses, mortgages, jobs etc...it seems so overwhelimg  :(  I know my husband would be sorted with a job, but how did you all do the rest?  How do mortgages work over there as far as documentation needed, how much to put down etc...?  ???

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

I know a lot of people have relied on family in the beginning. We stayed with my husband's family briefly while we looked for a palce (but we were only hunting to rent a flat) - and you'll find a lot of stories here about "living with the in-laws" in cases where people didn't have enough money to get on the proper ladder - it's really quite hard as anewcomer to said ladder.  :-\\\\ Your husband having a job right away would be a huge help though, and perhaps you could rent a place before looking for a house. As far as mortgages go - I'm clueless, so I'll let someone else step in. :) But yes - it is all completely overwhelming (especially when you look at your bank account and basically halve it!) - but if it where you and your husband should be (in your heart, in your mind) - then it is SO worth it. :)
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

I know it's goign to be a pain, but I'm thinking that this may be what we need.  My husband doesn't like working here in the U.S. but is worried about starting all over again in the U.K.  I wouldn't mind renting for a while, but eventually we'd love to buy property since we've only had to rent 6 months throughout our whole 5 years of married life.  We'll see what happens!  :-\\\\
