Not a Notts resident but in Derby (just down the road!) I found that I really learned my way around Derby by just heading into town on the bus and have a nice long walk around.

Great car boot sale at Derby Cattle Market on Sundays. Starts about 7 am and always have been able to find great stuff there. ASDA (think SuperWalMart) is a fairly inexpensive place to shop and there's one in Hyson Green.

Hello!

You'll like the area around Colwick.  It's very green :)

In terms of shopping, I personally can't stand Asda and Tesco I always leave there feeling like it's a miracle I've not killed anyone. And to be completely honest, stay as far away from the Asda in Hyson Green as you can. It is hell. (Although if you are up in the area, stop by some of the Asian shops on Berridge Road, they are cheap, friendly and have a really good variety of food, but I've not had much luck with the butchers as most only do chicken and lamb)

I much prefer Morrisons and Sainsbury's (there is a Morrison in just up the road from where you'll be in Netherfield and I know there is a Sainsbury off Queens Drive which isn't *that* far. There is a Tesco that is open 24 hours in Carlton which isn't far either. )  I also prefer Sainsbury's basic range of food to Tesco's or Asda and have found that for that the price is not more expensive, just better quality. For their non-basics stuff, it is a bit more expensive, but again, I think the quality is much better.  Also, I've found that you can get more unusaly cuts of meat at Morrison's.  Only place i've seen things like Pork Shank.

I found the lack of variety in the supermarkets to be quite frustrating, also the price of fresh fruit and veg seems quite high to me although I'm cheap.  My husband says that if the stores paid me to do my shopping i'd still not be happy and think i could have gotten it cheaper.

Lidl and Aldi, while having a rather bad reputation in the states are actually quite decent here.  Their fresh food is quite good and very reasonably priced.  Unfortunately there aren't either that are especially close to you, but if you don't mind traveling or you find yourself near one, I'd say it's worth it.  The only issue is that the brands are German and you'll not recognise any (although you'll run into alot that you won't know anyway.)

Since you'll be around in the summer, there are a lot of small markets (http://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=563) as well and there is the Cattle Market on Saturdays that has a car boot, your husband should know where this is, but if not, let me know and I will tell you.  These are good places to get veg and will often have traveling butchers, the car boot part of it is hit and miss, but if you go into the town centres you'll find little shops set up that have some good deals.

I think WebyJ's suggestion of just heading into town for a wander is good, but in terms of shopping for groceries or non-high street things, the City Centre is not the best option.  There is a decent indoor market in Victoria Centre that I would recommend for harder to find items, but don't buy meat from the Victoria Market.

Anyway, if you have any questions, just let me know. I'm happy to help :)

The car boot at the Derby Cattle Market is on Sunday and it starts about 7 and runs till 1 or 2 in the afternoon. It's really easy to find off the A52 at Pentagon Island (first left off the Roundabout then left again at the petrol station).

I'm a Derby girl so I've not been to that one. I've only been to the ASDA in Derby(Spondon) and have found it quite nice. I just googled that one to find the closest one to where the OP was...My apologies.

Peteslady - There are a group of us in Nottingham & Derby that get together every month or so. The last thing we did was go play bingo last month in Derby and we've gone on couple of ghost walks as well...so if you're interested in meeting up we're quite an interesting bunch but you'd be more than welcome!

No need to apologize! There is an Asda in West Bridgford, not far from OP that is nice, the one in Hyson Green is just hell lol. It's in a very crowded area and the staff are clueless and nothing is in stock (and it does't have kraft mac and cheese so points get knocked off there :).)

a friend does her non food shopping in Derby at the westfields (?)and raves about it. From what she's said it sounds much nice than either our malls, so I suggest checking it out for non-foody stuff. Also, I don't know if it's closed but there used to be a Hobby Craft in the Lady Bay shopping place that's just down the road from the marina. If it has, you may be able to get your jewelry materials at the range that is in the same place. They have all sorts of stuff and you never quite know what you'll find.

I've bought Kraft mac and cheese at the Hyson Green ASDA. I suppose it is a bit of a madhouse... But, I find ALL of the grocery stores in Notts to be a nightmare on Saturdays and Sundays.

I prefer Sainsbury's for actual shopping in store. The quality is higher/fresher--so things like fruits, veg, meats, eggs last a little longer. Otherwise, I go with tesco online with delivery--which comes from Long Eaton. We don't have a car, so the online shopping and delivery is really helpful.

Hi! I don't know Nottingham at all, but I am a car boot pro! And, yes, definitely haggle. Rule #1 at a car boot sale is never to pay the asking price!

Have fun!  :)

Hmm I must miss it when I've been there. It's so big and busy it's a bit overwhelming.

Before I discovered Sainsbury's we used to do our shopping at tesco at 11 on a friday night, oh my exciting life lol.

I definitely agree on Sainsbury's quality and over all more pleasant shopping experience.
