The Great Trader Joe's Blue Corn Tortilla Chips Mystery!
« on: May 26, 2010, 12:39:21 PM »
I was at the cinema yesterday and as I was leaving I noticed a bag of Trader Joe's Blue Corn Tortilla Chips that someone had left on their way out. I was very surprised and a bit hopeful that one might be able to get a hold of TJ's food in the UK.

Now the rational part of me thinks that some lucky expat received the chips in a care package, but the optimist is hoping that it is possible to get some TJ's food in the UK.

Can anyone help me solve the mystery? TIA!  :D

Oh, my. I would drive across the UK to get to a Trader Joes. Was it definitely the US Trader Joe's and not some evil company that is just getting our hopes up?

Definitely. That's why I actually stopped and looked - I saw it out of the corner of my eye and was like that doesn't belong here!

ooh well I don't know anything about a TJs opening here, but I can offer a possible explanation:

Aldi is owned by the same parent corporation that owns TJs.  When I lived in Germany (home of Aldi), I would randomly see TJ-branded items there, like bags of peanuts.

I haven't really seen this happen here, but then we don't go to Aldi nearly as often as we did there.  Make what you will of this (completely useless) information.  :D

I remembered this thread because I saw a man at Sainsburys last weekend packing all his shopping into Trader Joes bags, and it made me laugh. I also use Trader Joes bags here when I shop...had I been doing a big shop I would have given himsome soft of secret signal or something!  ;D

doh, I just re-read my post and realized I should have been more specific: when I said I randomly saw bags of TJs-branded peanuts etc "there", there = Aldi.  I'd see them for sale at Aldi.

Haven't seen any here, yet.  I'm looking forward to their July selection, though, because it's usually US-themed.  :)
