Camping with infants
« on: May 31, 2010, 10:15:05 PM »
Jon and I have been peer pressured into going to Shambala this year. It's an apparently very family friendly festival held in the end of August. The girls will be nearly 5 months old.

Has anyone camped with babies? Any tips? I love camping but I'm a bit nervous about doing it with the girls. Any advice is appreciated.

No advice but just wishing you luck!  :)

Maybe check the website of the festival to see what support they offer families?

It's a long time since we camped with small children and have never done it with babies, but the one thing I would recommend is taking your double duvet for yourselves rather than sleeping bags. Also means that you can get in and out of bed double quick if you need to see to the girls.  It doesn't really take up any more room in the car if you squash it flat, and it's so much more comfortable and warmer. If you are sleeping on a lilo just put a sheet over the top.

I second taking a duvet. We take two- one for on top and on bottom.
As for camping with babies we always take a travel cot or the carry cot to a pram and treat bedtime as normal.  We have been to a few family friendly festivals and they have all had good facilities, the only issue are the cues to use them. We always take a bucket to fill with water to take back to the tent to wash the kids down with at bedtime so we can get their pj's on them straight after and into bed, instead of dragging them back to the tent to do the whole routine.
Do you bottle or breastfeed? If you use formula than I would buy the ready made cartons of formula to use to make life easier.
Id also recommend using a sling (if you dont already), especially if it is muddy. I always take my pushchair for just incase it is hammering it down, but for the most part my kids would be strapped to me and it just made things so much easier- especially trying to fight your way through crowds as it is bad enough doing that on the high street let alone in a massive crowd at a festival.

I cant think of anything else at the moment, so if you can think of specific questions let me know.

It looks like there's going to be live music, in which case I would recommend these...

I think you'll have a great time, I love seeing families at festivals! Kids and babies seem to naturally enjoy the atmosphere :)

Oh we're defo getting ear defenders. I've found some on Amazon for about £10 but the camo ones on your link look way cute.

We've got a really big buggy that goes off road. We were planning on taking it so that we were bogged down with kiddies but I'll mention the slings idea to Jon. I think we'd bring them with us in any event but would also prefer to put the kids in the pram and let them sleep. The only problem with the buggy is that it takes up so much room that we're going to have to be very economical with space. Roof box!

We camp all the time took both our boys when they were very young, was always concerned about waking up the whole campsite too early, but it seems the fresh air made them sleep in a bit...
