Ehh.. it was an old bag I wasn't very attached to.  It's still useable, but yeah.. the layover was killer.  I wouldn't do it again, or at least not one that long.  A direct flight from Phoenix is 10-11 hours.  Add on another 10-11 in layovers and flight times.  Not cool.

Virgin is really good, as good as BA, if not better. You can also get some cheaper flights if you don't mind stopping in a European city for an hour or so which makes your journey a bit longer - you wouldn't even go outside the airport Shala - try KLM or Swissair, also Air Canada sometimes have cheap flights but that is an even longer journey cause then you have to go all the way to Toronto or somewhere. If you want to fly direct I'd say STICK WITH VIRGIN.

Been away a couple of days ... just catching up.  I've flown to and from LAX a lot BA, Virgin, American, Air New Zealand.

BA and Virgin flights - sometimes one is cheaper, sometimes the other as you've discovered.  Personal preference (and experiences) point me to Virgin and NOT BA.   The time I flew Air New Zealand it was great and you MAY find better availability / prices ... It's their NZ -> LAX -> London flight and being based in New Zealand they can sometimes have problems filling the leg that doesn't start or end in their home country.

Exactly, the quicker the better.  When I flew over here in April (on BA), the flight was even shorter than I thought it would be.  Straight shot from Orlando to London, in 7 hours.  I was thrilled that the plane was early.  LOL, that was until Immigration held me up for 2 1/2 hours....but, I have no reason to complain there because they let me through.
