My husband switched from Ensure because they will not insure Americans in the UK unless they have been driving here for 3 years. My husband looked around an switched ton Admiral because the person who he spoke to said all I need is my UK provisional license and then they would insure me. My husband switched to them and then today he calls them up to add me. They then call me at home and say they will not insure me to drive alone until I have passed the tests. I told the woman that in the UK Americans are allowed to drive for a year without taking the test. She said that is true but our company does not allow it and that your husband will have to ride with you until you pass. I mean come on I have been driving for almost 10 years in the states.

I am so tired of the who driving issue from learning how to drive a stick shift, taking lessons, to switching car insurances, to having to get a provisional aka the UK just wants £50 and a picture, to having the insurance company lie to my husband. We would have never even went with them if they would have told us the truth.

I need to be able to drive to get a job. I just signed up with an agency to get a job and I have to drive to be able to work. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Please help.

Try Aviva.  I switched to them after my husbands insurance company lied to us also!

Even better, call an insurance broker and ask them to find a good deal for you.  This is what I did and it was so stress-free!

It didnt cost me anything to use the broker (although I am sure they add something into the cost of your insurance).  I'm afraid I dont know any brokers in that area, but I am not sure if it matters if their office is near you, really.  I will PM you the name of my broker who is in Hampshire.  He was very helpful!

Yeh, but only on your US license, which they won't insure you on. And as you know a condition of a provisional license is that you can't drive alone. It's a complete pain in the ass, but I don't think they actually lied to you unless they specifically stated that you could drive on your own on a provisional license.
