Other Medicines & Birthcontrol

Ive been on depo provera birthcontrol and not due for another shot until next month. Being on this birth control means I get no heavy bleeding and the occasional spotting once in a blue moon.
A little while ago I had to go on anti-biotics,steriods and anti-histamines for an allergic reaction. When I was almost finished the course of these tablets, I started bleeding heavily non-stop ever since. Its been going on for over 2 weeks now.
Does this mean the medicines stopped the birth control from working?
And since Ive been bleeding so much for so long, is it wise to go to my GP?

Ink, antibiotics can "maybe" interfere with birth control, although I'm not sure what the effect would be on Depo (more familiar with its effect on the pill etc). Here's a wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antibiotic#Contraceptive_pills  I would definitely make an appt w/ your GP if you are having unusual bleeding, and, before you go, sit down and make a "normal"/"abnormal" chart so you can detail EXACTLY what has changed.  Sometimes it helps to have all of the symptoms clearly laid out (i.e. normally I bleed for 2 days of very light flow; I am currently on day six of very heavy flow...).
As you can see from the link, no one is positive how "much" the antibiotics would interfere, but it's ALWAYS okay to go ask! If you can't get in with your GP, and you have a sexual health clinic nearby, they would be a good bet--odds are they see tons of people in your situation and might be more aware of everything. (the nurses at my local sex health clinic are AMAZING).

The depo shot is largely thought to be unaffected by antibiotics.  However, there is certainly a school of thought that it doesn't hurt to use a back up method, just to be safe.

However, the bleeding isn't likely related to your depo shot being less effective.  Heavily bleeding is a pretty common side effect for depo.  It may stop as quickly as it started or you may need another form of hormonal birth control to trigger the break in bleeding.

Your doctor will probably give you some options to stop the bleeding but you are unlikely to have anything to worry about.
